Folks, In process of trying to figure out linkage to an old car with a newer transmission. So my first question is: Which way is Park on the 700R4 transmission linkage shaft....Left or right using the top as reference...?...see diagram....
You should be able to tell by the sound, when the internal detent throws in the lock gear into the rear drum... it will feel different from all the way the other way and sound different, too..
If you turn the wing / arm by hand ""P"" has a longer travel & a more Positive clunk sound , R N 4 321 have a click sound & all the clicks are closer & short . Like mentioned make sure you adjust the ""Tv cable"" correct , its very simple but "" Very Critical"" adjustment
HAMB advice can be scary at times. Here’s some visual hints. Remember that the forward position of shifter is usually Park.
I've read this a lot, but not sure I believe it. I've even read people saying it can fry the trans in just a few miles. But I played with adjustment a lot when I set mine up to try to get the setting exactly where it should be and probably drove 5-10 miles during the process with no problems, and all is still OK 2 years later.
You are correct. The "you will burn it up in one block" warning is an old wives tale. And/but the OP wasn't even asking about the TV cable. As far as the original question, I'm wondering why he even asked...a shifter kit (specific to a 700R4) will have instructions..
Well, thanks guys. I ask because the vehicle I am using has a column shifter that is all hacked up and I couldn't tell which way was/is park. Right now, I have no shifter on it and need to start it. Don't want to start it in gear. So it looks like the answer is clockwise to Park? (from the view in my picture)
I would assume you have a yoke or a driveshaft in the trans if you're gonna start the engine..Assuming you put fluid in the trans. At that point, park shouldn't be hard to find..Yes?
Not all badly adjusted TV cables will fry a trans, but it is possible... and i have done it. The issue is free play where you get throttle travel without TV travel so valve pressure is too. If its badly adjusted the other way it will work but could give harsh shifts, which you may not even notice in a rod. You cannot garantee a correctly adjusted TV in anything other than the stock installation without pulling the pan on the trans and checking travel.
