    Hello,

We live in an area steeped in hot rod history from the very early days of road trips and vacations in the late 40s to the current days. The greater Metropolitan Los Angeles area encompasses a huge place as seen on the landings from the jet airplane approach from everywhere to land at the LAX AIRPORT. Starting out near the Eastern desert areas approaching the landing strip covers the whole Metropolitan area in the early days and accounted for the large population counts for Los Angeles. This is/was hot rod heaven for a couple of teenagers that liked hot rods, drag racing and customs…

But, as isolated from the Metropolitan city areas of Los Angeles, we still see old cars still on the road, and they are still giving their owners some comfort and joy.

We had seen this old Mercury Comet parked by an apartment near the coastal beach areas. But, never on the road. Then one day my wife and I were out roaming around and she saw this old rusty Comet up ahead of us heading South on Coast Highway.

Was the owner having a great time inside of the Comet? Unless he had a Bluetooth phone music source blasting away while he was driving, it sure looked as if it was a good time moment inside the old car.

    Note:

When our son was approaching driving age, we saw a light blue Mercury Comet by the side of a road near our old house. It had a for sale sign on it and the odometer showed 15k miles. So, as nice of a condition this Comet was, 15k may have been from “a little old lady from the OC” selling her prized old car.

We showed it to our son and he initially liked it, as we had saved up his gift money over time and it was a good sale of a classic car. He knew he could have it the following day or week, but still needed time to think it over. Some of his friends already driving were driving old cars, but not this old…

My wife and I liked the light blue Comet and showed our son different ways to change the stock look of the light blue car.
upload_2023-11-9_3-17-18.png This was one of thee choices, slightly lowered with Moon Discs... Thanks @themoose

Note 2: from an old post:

I took him to see a Mercury Comet Two Door Sedan that an older couple had driven it around our neighborhood. It was cool looking stock, a baby blue color and the interior was pristine. It was parked about a couple of blocks from our old house. He liked it as it stood with stock hubcaps and the stock stance. But, I told him I would put on some Moon Discs and this is what it would look like finished. He was enthralled that I would offer something for his first ride. He did not know about American Racing 5 Spoke Mags, but that was fine. He wanted a reliable car to drive to school every day and to his afterschool job.

He wanted a different car after seeing what that Comet would look like in his thought process. Then, we took him to see a real live small Ford Station Wagon, with the hopes that the wagon would cover his interests in camping and going to the beach. Plus, the small stature of economy cars was the lowest portion of the insurance scale for teens.
    upload_2023-11-9_3-19-37.png
To spice up the plain blue, small station wagon, we told him that some add-on accessories would look good on that small wagon. I knew that any plain car or station wagon would always look better if we added some new wheels and possible paint if it needed it. He just wanted a reliable car and did not care what it looked like. The idea of his first car and freedom was thrown in that conversation somewhere.

If he did not like the small Ford station wagon, then my wife and I would use it for our expanding landscaping project-mobile. And our own insurance would be lower and we would have a compact station wagon for those camping trips, etc. Plus, the surfboards were now in the 7-8 foot category and would easily fit inside when walking away from the station wagon.

Last Saturdays ride. Cold but dry so my dog and me did a long ride through rural Swabia. Probably the last time this year as it keeps on raining and frosty times are ahead. 20231111_152420.jpg 20231111_152806.jpg

On the way to Bisbee today in the other old truck. Speedometer and gas gauge are not working yet. But it drives OK.

  21. Heading home after a friend’s celebration of life last Saturday. Sad day actually since we lost a friend as well as our local exhaust guy that was a true car guy and drag racer.
