6BB8C005-FF32-4482-BB44-634A74351B71.jpeg I have a ‘39 trans in my 3-window coupe. It seems about two inches too short to comfortably use. Anyone know the original length of the handle in ‘32? The ‘39 trans handle is 15” to the center of the ball.

When I had my 39 in 32 , ball was about height of bottom of dash,
You could get a SS doll rod , cut low off your existing shifter add to ,weld , shape to your liking & add ball ,,
Some one will chime in if original 32 shifter will fit 38-39 trains

No the 32 shifter won’t fit the 39 trans top. The portion that sticks down below the ball is shorter on the early shifters.

The most popular shifters are the swan neck from the late 30’s.

As mentioned, the "nub" part won't work. Ironically, a stock '32 shifter is one of the shortest ones they made. I don't have the length handy, but I've had a few. It was surprising how short they were stock.

I'll measure my uncut sticks when I get home. Yours seems a bit short. Also, a swan style vs. a straight may work better since it will bring the knob back closer to you.

Thanks guys for the information. I can lengthen this ‘39 shift handle but wasn’t sure of the length compared to a stock ‘32 one.

23 inch 50s ford half ton PUP 3 Speed lever works same bend as 37 cad lever i have one in my 32 with a stock seat.

  7. Get a 39 Swan Style shifter - it not only looks great, but is a much better length. I just drove my 32 Cabriolet and a 32 roadster with 39 transmissions in them last weekend - the 39 shifter is perfect.

I wouldn’t worry about the original size as mush as the size that fits you better. For semi trucks they make all shorts of custom bends and extenders, not sure of thread size, should be able to find them at a truck stop

Thanks everyone. I’ll just lengthen the one I have to fit me.

  11. With some rod stock, a hacksaw, and a few minutes on a welder you can have about any length and look you want.

A while back I bought a bunch of modular, threaded, extension pieces, some straight and some with a dogleg, that can thread together to make a number of wonky shape shifter sticks. I'm just playing around with it for now but I might crank one or two together to throw down on my swapmeet table someday.
However, if someone out there wanted to take some of these pieces off my hands...... we could talk. :p

I cut a piece off the top of a 1939 shift rod for my '32.
Shift positions below are in 2nd and 3rd.
