New guy here. Have a 29 Model A and the front crossmember is pretty much a goner, cracked where the u-bolts were tightened by Thor himself apparently and pretty rusted. My first thought was repair but found reasonable replacements. My question to those in the know, would this 32 member work ok with the stock 29 spring and whatever else. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speedway-1932-Ford-1-Inch-Drop-Front-Crossmember,6747.html thanks in advance!
All those aftermarket crossmembers are based on the Model A design. Some, like this one have less drop down in the centre - i.e. are flatter than stock - which lowers the car. Original A crossmembers themselves were used in a 32 ch***is was a way to lower them some as the stock A member itself is flatter than the 32. The crossmembers like you posted are strictly a weld in deal made for a boxed frame, they will not rivet back in location like an original.
Thanks X38! Very helpful info! I will be boxing the frame so weld on should work well. Guess one more part added to the cart!
Also be aware '28-'29 have a higher radiator mount on the crossmember than '30-'31 or '32. At least going lower like '30-'32 all you need to do is shim the radiator up. Dave
So much simpler for a newbie to just find an original A crossmember and use the rivet holes to line it up. A nice one will cost the same, but fit perfectly. You know about the width difference, right?
There is life outside Speedway. Some would say a better life. (I'm talking about parts suppliers, not factory parts.)
Check Roadster Supply. They offer an A crossmember with rivet holes ready to go. Better to deal a small family company that Speedway.
Is the Roadster Supply crossmember meant for an A frame or a 32 frame? Hard to believe, but the A crossmembers are wider and need a little t******* to fit in a 32. If the OP wants it to fit an A frame he’s better off starting with full width to properly place the rails. I’ve got a dozen A crossmembers sitting around the yard, so I know they aren’t hard to find. Unless a guy is a 1-800 builder.
