Bumping this because it's the coolest thing ever. And I need to make one myself!

Shortening a knocker (post 24) is a good flying start on making and end cap. Brattons has decent ones for cheap, since fleam arkets are gone for the winter...you want one that tightens firmly against end of axle as well as covering threads. A properly tightened hub needs enough pressure to mushroom the axle tip if unprotected...

What size hole is on the hub side?? I'm new to all of this!!!!

  6. I'm also wondering what size is the hole?

  7. I think they vary, you'd have to take a caliper and measure your hub.

  8. I used a 1-5/8" hole saw to make the hole in my puller, fits everything we have used it on so far.

Just wanted to say this is a great tech thread. I had a '40 Ford hub with a sheared key that had been spun on the axle. A three jaw posi lock puller wouldn't move it. This home made puller did the trick. Thanks for taking the time to post this.

Here,s mine-made with two different size holes-we found two different sizes in the hubs-wide five hubs are slightly differently sized to later hubs, the nut has been machined to suit the end of the axle to save thread damage.
You can tell it was built by an ex bulldozer mechanic-it would pull the final drives out of a Cat D8!
He also builds my flatheads and q/changes for me-he had heaps of early flatties in the sixties. Ashleys 48 repairs & hubpuller 047.JPG Ashleys 48 repairs & hubpuller 048.JPG Ashleys 48 repairs & hubpuller 049.JPG Ashleys 48 repairs & hubpuller 050.JPG

Oops-forgot to say he built it from memory-he lent his original in the 60,s and it was never returned.
Also I believe he had to machine the pieces of tubing to suit- i.e to be able to slide together. A nice job, but pretty heavy to carry around in the tool box!

Back up. Just saw this. Absolutely brilliant. Now that I need one, I'm going to make one. When I die and the kids are squabbling about what they're taking home out of my tool box, there will probably be a question from one of them. "I wonder what the hell this thing is?" and it'll go in the scrap iron with all the other stuff they never learned how to use. I'm pretty sure none of them are related to me, anyway. ;)

In case anyone is interested I've saved several hub puller pix to my hard drive. Several came from this thread but many of the pix in this thread are now lost. Some came from other threads. It's a pretty sure thing that ALL came from the hamb.

I'll post them here. Each puller is in a new response so as to not be confusing; EXCEPTING the second set of pix.

    First:

Some of these pullers appear to use bolts with ACME threads (most likely "borrowed" from other pullers) and some use garden variety hardware store bolts.

Does it really make much difference?
