Hot Rods mufflers

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by bodymanmp, Nov 7, 2023.

  1. I have thrush welded mufflers on the Fargo, I’m very happy with them on a mild 360

  5. When I bought my Coupe, it had short turndowns, coming right off the Ramhorns. Loud as fuck!!! I ran pipes out the back, and it sounded like crap. Put Smithys on there, but it sounded like an 80's Camaro!and the cam cackle was gone. Cut those off...Now I just run 2-1/2" pipe, dumping just in front of the rear wheels. Pretty loud, but quieter than the original set up. But....it sounds like a Hotrod, NOT a Streetrod!!! I've noticed a lot of todays modern Mustangs and Camaros sound like boats or V6's. I'm sure at some point i'll put glasspacks on it.

I have used and been happy with them, too. They are priced well, sound great, and for what I'm usually running, "losing" three horsepower will never be noticed: https://www.thrushexhaust.com/mufflers/thrush-welded-muffler

They've always held up well on my DDs, and while they don't last forever under those conditions here in WI, for a non-year-'round vehicle which is usually garage kept, I think they'd be a good choice. I plan to use two behind my Buick 300 when the time comes.

And they're darn affordable, too. I had a set on an O/T daily years ago. Sounded great and lasted quite a while even with the harsh Michigan winters.

Bodymanmp .... I'm using the AP Enforcer glass packs on my Coupe now and love them. I had been running 2-1/2" straight pipes for a long time and that was fine, yet a bit tiresome driving back and forth to our Hot Rod Shoppe every day. I chose the 30" long version, and they are just right, I can carry on conversations for the first time in 33 years. They are available from numerous sources, I just used Summit Racing: AP Exhaust Enforcer Glasspack Mufflers - Free Shipping on Orders Over $109 at Summit Racing

    Hot Rods RULE !!!

Well the daily has Dynomax Cat back on it, but the rest of them have the factory mufflers complete with the correct part numbers on them for the specific car.

  14. Glasspacks on most of them, both Cherry Bomb and old Blue Streaks. Have some old Cherry Bomb turbo mufflers on a poncho motor that sound great, don't drone like the glasspacks but sound wicked outside the car.
Duals with NO crossovers for me.

  15. I have 2"x18" cherry bomb glass packs I got on a closeout hooked to 55 Chevy 265 exhaust manifolds on a stock 76 350 with Edelbrock carb and intake. Honestly sounds so good I'm waiting to swap to lakes pipes with baffles till I can and head swap. And anyone curious I have insane hearing....as in I never get less than 100% on any hearing test. I know 2" diameter pipe sounds small but it's a low compression 350 MAYBE putting out around 200 hp. But with the current setup it has a perfect sound

Just a silly question, how many of you guys get the glass packs hot and shove a hose into the exhaust pipe so you could break the glass to make them sound better? Is that still a thing? My dad said that it was a thing back in the day so it’s got to be traditional :D

    32 Roadster, 327 SBC w/Comp cams nostalgia grind, rear exit exhaust...using 22" Smithy's glass-packs with 2" exhaust, no cross-over.
It sounds great and goes with the style of the car.

31" glass packs, 2.25 inlet/oulet ... tail pipes end right before mufflers

They are a zillion old and starting to rust, I painted them 5 or 6 years ago but has burned off

They sound nice but have gotten a bit loud

Would like to find some quiet mufflers I could slip back into there place

Any seen any quiet mufflers around 30" to 32" long ??

I used Thrush Glasspacks, built up Chevy 250, cast iron headers, one muffler per header, and coming out the ovals on the rear bumper. Sounds pretty awesome. Really gets noticed over 2500 rpm.
