Cars are classified as 3 window, 5 window etc, but they don't include the rear window. Rear windows matter too

 

Somehow, we ended up with 44 gallon drums down here… at least before we went metric.

We used imperial measurement, so our gallons were larger than U.S. gallons. People often forget or don't know that when arguing about or comparing m.p.g. Same with fuel tank capacities.

Ford's idea of calling the firewall the dash in 1932 never caught on - even with Ford fans.

 

My understanding was always, that the front glass was not a window.
Becoming popular as of 1910 and reducing the need of driving goggles, the windscreen AKA windshield, was not included in the window count.
The rear glass was considered to be a window.

It's interesting how languages develop. There's always a story behind every anomaly. The BBL thing always bugged me, so I dug into that one too. Seems the BBL Blue BarreL thing is legit, A shipping color identifier. To me, though the 3/4 cam thing is just poor marketing. I equate 3/4 cam as being one for a V6!

"Dashboard" was a term left over from horse drawn carriages. Its purpose was to keep the road dirt, clods of mud, and kicked up horseshit off of the passengers when you made the horse(s) dash, or gallop. Speaking of "carriage", that's where "car" came from.

As an aviation guy, manifold vacuum drives me a little nuts. Vacuum is just a backwards way of measuring manifold pressure.

 

I’m a history buff, so I’m going to get to the bottom of this. One possible reason: 42 US gallons = 36 Imperial gallons, aka 1 beer barrel, weighs around 300 pounds. They needed a standard size for military supplies, so that’s a weight that two men can probably lift safely. I will try to confirm my theory.
