Changing the rear main seal on my 56 T-Bird 312 motor. When I removed the oil pump the drive shaft also fell out. One end of the drive shaft is pointed, and one end has a small rounded knob on it. My question is does the pointed end of the oil pump drive shaft go up or down?

They have a little room to float between the pump and the dizzy, but the last couple that I've reinstalled I want to say the pointed was end towards the oil pump.

There should be a clip on one end, at the oil pump. It prevents the shaft from pulling out with the distributor and dropping into the pan.

IIRC, the pointed end is up to allow easier alignment when installing the distributor, but it’s been a long time.
