Hot Rods Universal joint help

I have an old 40/50s 3 speed trans with an open drive, Trying to find the right size ujoints to fit my application but I'm starting to think they don't make one. The Trans yoke measures 1.00 inside diameter and the rear-end yoke is 1.188 which is pretty standard. I can't seem to find one that works. Anyone else ever run in to this issue? I did find a 1.00 x 1.125 that's the closest. Any help would be appreciated.

doesn't look like ****er has anything. The 5-105X ujoint might fit the transmisison yoke. 5-178X might fit the rear. but you didn't give "across" dimensions.

But is there going to be a driveshaft in there, as well? so things can move?

 

No drive shaft, straight connection to rear end. Its a belly tank build.

 

I'll measure across dimensions tonight.

 

I've used a local 'drive shaft' specialized repair shop. They have access to all kinds of wierd components.
Just take them the drives shaft and the yoke and they put it together.

Back in the day, the spiders on some u-joints were the same diameter even though the caps were different OD. You may be able to swap caps to get what you need. If not, you may have to swap yokes.

If you have the cap diameters, cross lengths and inside/outside clip information, your local NAPA can help you out.

 

i went to my local napa and they couldn't even get me a chevy u joint for the front of my driveshaft and a chevy to 9" ford rear end. just go to inland empire save yourself the headache of running around trying to get it local. now i know your in the greater la area and don't like driving around, i lived down there for 39 years, no one ever wants to drive anywhere outside their own town but just do it.

 

Thanks Flatheadgary. I don't mind driving. my parents live out in Chino, and I'm out there all the time. Inland isn't that much farther.

 

I had a FED back in the 70's. My local speed shop had a u joint that mated to the two different size yokes. I thought they were out lawed in drag racing? You have a tanker, and with all of the replies, I ***ume you can still run the U joint set up. My new FED has one of those fancy splined couplers, I don't even know what they are called? But, if you can't find the U joints, would you consider the splined coupler? If it would work?

 

@53kemper , have you been able to get the needed U joint?
