Technical Ford brakes Buick drums

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by project starter, Oct 23, 2023.

  1. Well I have finally found all of the correct parts to complete the front brakes. Thanks to all who offered suggestions, opinions and advice while I was trying to figure this out. I know it isn’t rocket science but I was attempting this setup for the first time and some of the parts came with the car but some were missing. Time to make the brake lines for the rest of the car. Hopefully I get my firewall back from the painter soon. I sure I will have more questions when I start plumbing the brake lines. Thanks again.

I thought I would share what I did in 92. 30 years ago.
I used 46-48 backing plates and some 72 Chevy parts and a lot of the stock Buick parts. The shoes fill all the lining area and are fully covered with nothing hanging out. The shoes are 2 1/2 wide
46-48 hubs and spindles were used.
The grooves in the drums were just relieved back to the iron but were not machined deeper. The drum iron should never be cut. The fins were cut back about 3/8 as they looked bad and hit the steering arms.
I used to do a lot of these. I actually made tooling to machine the hubs and drums. I did them for a lot of friends. I just finished another set for me. These pics were taken after 10 years of use. I show a pic of the car in 03 with them. 325DA350-A380-45EC-9269-48BF76CF02B7_4_5005_c.jpeg 1740BB0B-13EA-4021-AF18-019E92FF537A.jpeg DA190468-48E1-4D55-90CC-81C814DBDB7B_4_5005_c.jpeg
