For years, it seemed like there were 7 pages of posts on here everyday. Lately, unless I’m missing something, we make it to about 4 1/2 new pages everyday. Sort of scary/sad. Tell me I’m wrong.
A lot just come here to have their problem solved then disappear. Another large group I think are long term members who no longer post but do come here regularly.
It's not quite the same place as it was when I joined on here almost 17 years ago, but I guess that speaks for its' relevancy and longevity. Things change, evolve, move in new directions, but Ryan and the Moderators have somehow managed to keep the place as pure as possible. It's not the place for everyone and that's a good thing.
Once you get flamed a couple of times it makes you a bit more hesitant to post. Also some of the emeritus crowd, well I guess all of them are missing. Some are using other media which I haven’t embraced, I keep coming to the well for a smaller bucket.
Flamed, are you kidding? The last time anyone got flamed here was at least 10 years ago! Probably more like 15. Back then flaming was flaming!
I guess it is shrinking a bit but still the best forum. In The Netherlands we used to have a pre 66 forum and some us car fora but they are gone or dead because everybody is on fakebook en things like that. I prefer a forum like this since you can search and look back , I learned a lot on this forum and still love it.
Weekends are a bit slower here. Now and then I get a glitch where I get to page 3 and I see posts from 4 days ago.
I just noticed that i joined 20 years + 1 week ago. So i went back 20 years and checked my intro. There were 28 replies, half of those have,nt been here in donkeys ages. The other half all within the last few months and a handfull within the last week.
It's like the Chinese buffet. Sample a thread, post if you like it, never go back if you don't. It is really frustrating though when you reply 'cuz you had same problem as OP and you never hear back from them.
I've been here for 14 years, now 76 and my participation has dropped off some. I still check in every AM with my coffee and enjoy the HAMB. I've enjoyed sharing most all of my stories/experiences, IMO more than the average guy as I've done a lot, have had an interesting life, worked/ played hard and like many, age/health has caught up with me. Friends here and in life are dropping away and sadly funerals/sympathy cards are part of the norm these days. Life has been very good to me, no complaints or regrets, I'm Thankful for every day as Nobody is promised tomorrow and the HAMB is still the best deal for us CarCrazy's, Everyone have a Great day !
Compared to 10 or 15 years ago I would say yes it is, but it appears to still be a vibrant, relevant place, no small feat given the explosion of IG. The conversational and one-on-one possibilities inherent in a forum context represent a distinct advantage over the posing-dominated IG approach. You need to be a self-promoter? Head on over to IG, for sure. Not a bad thing for the HAMB.
When I posted up looking for instructions, the post was simply deleted because such things "have been covered before" and that was that. I'm at the point where I don't know how to fix it, haven't been able to find a shop willing to do a piece of the work to get me over the hump, and don't know anyone in person that could help me. I'm contemplating giving up entirely. That said, reading the build threads does inspire me to go work on my junk, I just wish I knew more car people in my area. I'm hesitant to let strangers into my shop.
Sorry to hear. Maybe someone near you will see your post even here and be willing to help. As far as the place shrinking, that does seem to be the case. Most of my best friends in the world that I even met here don’t post anymore. They moved on to other places. I tried those places and decided I wasted too much time there. So, now I am just back to wasting time here.
Social media is just plain easier and has much more content, but the content isn't very high quality. So.. i think it has just thinned the heard out here from all the rat rod bullshit posers that use to troll on here. And.. to be honest... the hot rod hobby is a dying one. The average age is still fairly high, and most of the OG guys i met and were my heroes when I was a teenager (I'm 41 now) are mostly dead or old enough they cant get out much anymore.
I still visit daily. I have noticed you don’t see as many projects started as in the past. Twenty years ago I was 50. I had more available income, I’ve been retired now for 5 yrs. My interests and spent time have expanded to other areas. Fishing, biking, home maintanence projects and we also expanded our B&B availability here at the house. Winters were always spent working on new projects but now I look forward to spending them in Florida. I used to drive the old cars to work 3-5 days a week. I still use the cars very much but am happy to just keeping them running. Ive never used Facebook, but found two flathead groups there that are very active. I’ll never take a deep dive into that social media B/S.
Ryan actually recently posted that we’ve had a huge gain in membership. I think there are just as many posts per day it’s just within existing threads if that makes since. more reply’s and less starting new posts
Have you tried the search function? If, as you say, such things have been covered before, then there is a very good chance you will find the info you need
I did. If one has enough experience they might be able to interpret from others have done. I sure couldn't, and I farmed it out.
I might be responsible for some of the shrinkage Before I stopped posting daily I USED to post at least 10 posts a day. Many were new threads but also in older established threads. My "Watched Tread" list looks about the same couple of pages daily but never counted.
So start a thread describing what your problem is so we can help you get over the hump you are stuck on.
Well, (new?) members that happen to ask about something a bit too modern don't exactly get the warm fuzzy welcome feeling, it's more like the warmth offered by villagers with pitchforks and torches. As the 1965 cutoff is becoming more and more distant, the amount of people motivated enough to stick with the style and technology of the era will reduce, not to mention the availability of the "right" parts. 1965 was 58 years ago, most of the people who like the style of car will either have been driving one themselves at the time, or seen them around as a child. This puts these people at about 70 years old or more by now.
