Recent finds and buys

I had a '63 "wrongbed", should have never sold it. I have a leftover tailgate here in North Atlanta. Send me a message if you are interested. I was going to make one of those benches out of it. But i'd rather see it get one back on the road.

 

This deli/butcher near my house had the basement being cleaned out by those 1-800-got-junk guys, I passed by on the way back from school and saw the truck was filled with these old drink crates, they must have had about 15 of them, plus more coming out of the basement. The guys said they were just going to the dump so I could take them if I wanted them, one of the deli employees took the rest. It would be such a shame to see these go to the landfill, I just couldn't let that happen.

 

local estate sale find

 

picked up this '53 kodak signet 35 for 40 bucks. took an impact during shipping but i fixed the little tab and its back to working like it should, once i clean the lense and such i'll toss some 35mm film in it and get it developed, see how it does.

ps: what was with late 40s/early 50s cast metal stuff and it having 3 lines/layers?

 

Got this at an auction this weekend for 10 bucks. Useless, but cool to look at, had to adopt it.

 

Found these mirrors at an estate sale. Owner said they were on his Mecuey Monterey when he got it..they are definitely universal style fit, no brand.

Anyone know anything about them? They are going on a 46 dodge rat rod, but I'd love to learn more about them!

You'll find that you will get a much warmer reception here if you avoid using the term "rat rod". They're not what the HAMB is all about. I think you've pretty well identified what your mirrors are if there's no other markings on them. They look like some DIY parts that might have been sold thru J.C. Whitney or similar catalog parts house. They appear to be made of better quality stuff than a lot of the cheapy, universal-fit parts of the era.

Thanks for the tip! Rat rod probably isn't the right term for the build anyways. My OCD won't let me build a hunk of junk that the rat community would accept.

Update: THANK YOU! I didn't even think about checking old JC Whitney catalogs. Your suggestion lead me to a thread right here on the HAMB of a 1958 catalog and there they were, "rocket-styled mirrors" for $7.95

Well you're doing pretty good if you can figure out how to effectively use the on-site search feature. It can be a bit mysterious at times . . .

You might also consider adding at least a basic geographical location to your member info. At least that way we'll know whether you're in southwest Minnebraska or eastern Swaziland.

 

They were issued around 1954. Definitely worth something since they’re a mostly intact sheet.

 

I remember seeing them commonly used on post cards when mailing a regular 1st class letter cost 1¢ or 2¢ more than a post card. I think you could even buy blank, pre-paid post cards at the post office that came already imprinted with this same image on the front upper right corner.

Post cards. They were the text message of their day!

 

You could use 22 of them to mail a greeting card, but there may not be room on the envelope for the address.

 

I just learned something else about those 3¢ Liberty stamps. There's a lot of knuckleheads on Ebay that are asking STUPID MONEY for them. Even cancelled ones. But then that sort of describes a lot of vendors on Ebay, don't it?

 

Wife and I were out hitting antique and resale shops over the weekend. I picked up a few things. I’m slowly filling my oil bottle holder. Man it’s hard to find these at a reasonable price. I was happy to find one of the spouts actually has the cap on it. I rarely see these.
Plus both hose clamp holders came with clamps!

 

Both the Wittek and Ideal clamp racks are super cool, I would have jumped on those, too.

 

Yeah, I jumped on those! The cabinet one was a little pricey, but the rack made up for it in cheapness.
I forgot, I picked up a couple mini oil cans. Cheap, and I actually use them.
I put the bigger one there for perspective.

 

Recent swap meet haul

 

Brought this home from Hollywood this morning.

 

A bike speedometer with a tach? And only one needle? LOL! That 50 mph top speed seems pretty optimistic too. Well, maybe on a Whizzer bike . . .

 

I've had a couple of SW bicycle speedometers, all of which originally came on exercise bikes.

 

I just listed a few of these 1903 George Washington 2 cent stamps on eBay for One Dollar with FREE Postage, finding almost free envelopes is the key to making a profit.

 

This chassis sat on a shelf at Mon & Dad's until 1978, then it made it to my basement, then up to the office. Hank found it a few days ago and chewed up a tire. Is it a Corvette or Cunningham? I need to find a complete kit now. Thanks Bob

 

That NSW plate dates to 1967. It would fit nicely on a HR Holden
