The ball is in your court now, we did our part and will continue to do so until we can't anymore. Your age group needs to teach and encourage the youth of today! Don't tell me that they are not out there, they are but they need your help and encouragement if this hobby is to live on!
I have been guilty of not making new posts my activity has been down lately due to spending time with an O/T vehicle. I have began working on my 40 getting ready for paint but in I feel like there are a ton of threads showing exactly what I’m doing and I can’t keep them updated regularly. This is the only social media I use, I don’t care about all the other crap that comes with the others. I vow to make a new thread for finishing the 40. It has some Hamb history, even before I acquired it and spent a little time at Hamb drags…some of you know it See ya soon
Probably. I don't post much on the internet anywhere anymore. I get sick of all the arguing and keyboard warriors and people who don't know what the hell they're talking about. It's not so much here, but it keeps me off the internet as a whole.
It may have slowed a bit but I love this place . Made a ton of friends, maybe an enemy or 2 Its a great place to learn, laugh and even sometimes cry
The age demographic is certainly affecting the hobby, and it's easy to understand the difficulty of younger people to get involved. Us old guys grew up with modified cars, racing on lonely roads on the outskirts of town, and hanging out with friends, it was what we lived for. Life today is far different, and everything costs so much more. I find myself scanning the HAMB everyday, and try to add what little wisdom I have to share, and appreciate those who view my projects. The build threads are my favorite, and we certainly need more, to keep this forum viable. At 75, not sure how many more I have in me, but I am planning a new one right now !
As someone who's never actually posted here, (until now) (Sorry about not giving an introduction post) I think it may have something to do with the fact that the younger folks might not quite have as much "dough", It's not the 1930's anymore, you can't get a used ford for 40 bucks, tear the fenders off and make a gow job, which isn't to say there weren't more dedicated people in the beginning, it's just that it's way harder for someone to get their foot in the door... There's going to be less people in this for sure, but they're going to be more dedicated.
Thanks for the perspective. Yeah, things are more expensive today...but when I started I was making 3 bucks an hour, and that new intake manifold cost $100, do the math, it's not really any different today. What is different seems to be the rarity of younger folks to have any interest at all in these "grandpa cars". I know there are lots of cases of geezer hot rodders dying off and none of the kids have any interest in getting all the neat old hot rod goodies for free (except as something to sell off for cash) But you have enough interest to be here, I think you'll be able to figure out how to make it happen. Showing an interest, to the guys that have old stuff, is a great way to get your foot in the door. You might find there is a lot of generosity, given the right incentive.
Unfortunately most of the kids now just want to sit around, stare at their phones and play video games. There’s a few out there that are real up and coming, but few and far between unfortunately. Most of the “car guys” my age don’t even know what a carb or a distributor is…
Welcome. I keep getting this sinking feeling that none of these cars are going to be worth dick in 20 years. Electric cars, emissions regulations, and the fact that 95% of the people who care about these cars are likely to not be around or in any condition to keep them going 20 years from now, likely myself included. That or they just get outlawed altogether if the safety / green initiatives get their way. Maybe I'm wrong. Young guys can't afford to buy in or don't care about these cars. At 46 years old I'm the young guy at most cruises and shows.
Again, Welcome I understand where your coming from and tend to agree with you. However, in the 1930s nobody had any money. The Great Depression 1929-1939. Ask LothianDon, he was there. and he has a good sense of humor.
There definitely a shortage of handy/resourceful “guys”, that are potential H.A.M.B. type enthusiasts. Not just on here, but lacking throughout our whole country. This funny video highlights the shift.
If you go to the site's dedicated to "Woodies" you MIGHT get one post a week, if that. The last post for Woodies on the A.A.C.A. site was over a week ago. I would be happy with one post a day!
I have been on here for many years and my comments are just from my experience. I have just about 100% answers for my technical questions, and continue to, but you need to have thick skin, as like most other forums there are always a bunch of what I call "Can Rats" that just like to sit on three phone books to reach the computer keys to lip off. Especially to the new members.. I don't post as much as I used to, as most of my questions have been answered. However I do frequently check in, as I really like this forum. It still gets top shelf from me.
My son can’t wait for me to give him my old H.A.M.B. classic cars / trucks / muscle cars so there is hope yet the younger fellas keep on keepin’ on.
It would seem that at least a good portion of the car world is in the midst of the off season & hunkered down working on a project & would be closer to the key board seeking a part or help with an issue, but then we need to remember the holiday season is upon us, family, football etc. all compete for our idle time should we any to spare.
Same here and my two boys have already had HAMB-friendly vehicles starting before they could drive. Part of it is us making it fun for the next generation so they will be interested.
Funny thing, my middle daughter sent me a message last night asking if I had a Will. She wants my ‘57 and all my firearms. I told here first one to get into the safe has the advantage to fight it out amongst you three girls
I've been here for almost 20 years and do miss all the guys that have passed on, wonder why the living members went to other sites. I'll have wired both of my projects myself before I can afford and know how to use a smart phone. I do miss all the builds that were started, then ended after getting halfway done. Bob
Two of my grandsons lived with me for several years. They were around, but they weren't really interested in what I was doing. Truth is, I was on the road all week and had little time for anything other than taking care of what was necessary to keep the house intact. They understood my motorcycles and had dirt bikes of their own, so we had some common ground. Shortly before I retired, I took the 16-year-old to the first big Coker sponsored show that wasn't in downtown Chattanooga. It was huge, and there were lots of traditional cars as well as all the OT stuff, 4 wheelers, muscle cars, rat rods, you name it, it was there. The grandson gave only cursory looks at the stuff I liked, but his attention was really drawn to an OT Jeep that I considered a street rod/rat rod. It didn't have all the chains, barbed wire, skulls and associated crap, but it was a well-constructed, clean machine with a godawful lime green shiny paint job. Not something that I would be interested in in a million years, but it got his interest immediately. At some point in time, the things that we like are going to be gone and what the younger generations like is what is going to be on the street. I don't fret about it too much; I just appreciate the fact that I've been fortunate enough to be involved in what we do as much as I have. If my grandchildren have learned any skills from me, it's even better.

Food for thought... I wasn't there but in the 40's & 50's it sounds like a lot of people (include youth/kids) made 'cheap fun' which included wrenching on derelict cars to some degree which was probably the grassroots of hotrodding, so... if our hobby tanks in it's current form, it's POSSIBLE, when our cars & parts can be bought for pennies on the dollar, they may just become a new kind of 'cheap fun' and form of personal expression. Who knows... In the meantime, they are not necessarily 'cheap fun'. just a thought or two that comes to mind from time to time, Gotta56forme/Scott
Well Yeah... People pass away, some lose interest or move on to other place with acceptance of different vehicle types. There that place called FB or whatever. I took a break from here for about 5-6 years. There are plenty of younger people in LA with vintage vehicles, but not many come on here and the ones that do dont have the thick skin for some of these old foggies rappin about their good ole days... Anyhow, yeah there is finite number years-days left. A lot cool forums are now only viewable through achieves.
