My buddy had an older sister that had great legs like that when I was about 14, I used to tell him she had legs clear to her ass to piss him off:p She would be about 82 now:eek:

Is that a bear I see hanging off the roof of the Falcon?

@Sky Six The darkened strip on the white sand is the early access path to the Balboa Pier.

    Hello,

Nice capture of one of our favorite places along the South OC coastline. The beach is one of the cleanest white sand beaches and the fine sand is/was always good for sifting and making wet sand castles/walls, etc. It did not change much in those early days.

Our dad took us there after going on the Balboa Ferry (a block to the left of the photo) and we spent countless hours playing on the sand. The water out in front of the Balboa Pier and the Rendezvous Ballroom was a kid hazard. Why? The beach takes in the swells from just about any direction. But, the Southern Hemisphere swells create the most hazardous moments along this beach.

The rip currents make it move in one direction at a record speed. But, it is the bottom that surprises even the most experienced of swimmers. As one walks into the water, it is simple ankle to knee water level. Then a few more steps, satisfaction and security comes into play. So, unsuspectingly, a few more steps and now, you are up to your chest/neck in deeper water. Surprise!!!

This is only a few steps from the safety of the sloped angle dry beach. The calm look is pleasant and inviting, but one must know what is in store when one walks into the swirling water. Then add in the side current that will take anyone from the pier past the Rendezvous Ballroom, instantly is disheartening.

Our dad warned us, but he liked the beach because it was usually empty. It was the fish he caught from the shore that was different, fun and exciting. We were happy to be able to play in the sand and the final reaches of the white water rolling up the slope. Making sure we were on top of the berm and not so close to the crashing waves and rolling whitewater.

During the times afterwards, it still remained one of the nicest beaches for the low key amenities and clean sandy beaches. Jump up many years and it was a fun place to go to the beach with our teenage friends. We were already knowledgeable about the area along the Peninsula. Besides, “The Wedge” is a few blocks down to the end of the Peninsula becoming a drawing card, while being a fun place to go and explore the waves and the myriad of sailboats going out to the ocean.

    Dick Dale... Let’s go Trippin’

My high school English teacher liked his music, too, but she would have a fit at the English grammar usage.

So, what made us come back time and time again? It was either the different type of girls hanging around, the music, or it was the hot rod cruise down the coast into the Newport-Balboa area that was far enough away from our normal Bixby Knolls areas. YRMV

The historical marker (#35) for the Rendezvous Ballroom is in Balboa is near the Balboa Pier, right on the famous boardwalk. If you have ever stayed at the Balboa Inn on the corner leading to the entrance of the pier, it is a short stroll West (on the boardwalk) to the marker.
