I recently installed a new Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and an Edelbrock AVS2 650cfm carb onto a sbc 350, and ever since then I have been having some issues. My main issue is that while driving, randomly, the engine seems to lose power and my gas pedal seems to lose all response. However, the engine still idles and sometimes may recover or will die once I pull over. Could my floats be off?
I replaced the fuel lines with steel braided ones prior to the new intake and carb, and my fuel pressure is at 6psi and I'm installing a pressure regulator later this week to turn that down.
I have a filter between the tank and pump and one between the pump and carb. I can double check both to see if there is any junk in them.
Not familiar with accel’s version, but I’d also check the distributor carefully ie wiring, connectors, rotor ****on, carbon tracking in cap, mechanical advance etc.
Cl***ic symptoms of fuel starvation. The gas is not getting into the carb fast enough to keep up with the usage. It is enough for idle but not enough to keep up with a load. Check filters and eliminate the one between the tank and the pump. Pumps are great for making pressure but bad for suction. Disconnect both ends of the gas line and blow it out with compressed air. Check the pump pressure and disconnect the line at the carb, stick the line in a can and check for output by cranking the engine with the ignition disabled. Check the carb inlet to make sure there's not a little filter in the inlet. If all checks out the float setting may be the problem. Also check the gas cap to make sure it's vented and working. A plugged vent hole in the cap can create a vacuum in the tank and create fuel starvation. Hope this helps. Edit: If that HEI distributor uses the GM flat pickup inside the distributor, Change it with a new or known good one. These things are often bad right out of the box and can mimic a starvation issue.
^^What he said.^^ And if installing a new (or different) ignition module be sure to use thermal paste on the bottom of it, not just dielectric grease.
I will definitely try everything that has been suggested when I can. Once I do, I'll drive around and report back and see if things have improved.
