Can you still get these? I read about it in a street rod book. Aparently Ford sold the blueprints to a French company who continued to produce and improve the Ford Flathead. Halibrand was buying the blocks and selling them I guess.
The Halibrand deal never went through. There's a guy in Texas that has a pile of these "French" blocks. http://www.webbed-toe.com/flatheads.htm Try that.
I read that the castings were supposed to be better, something about more nickel content in the metal, and some other improvements also. But, I also read the SCTA won't allow them?
True. The French engines continued to be manufactured as late as 1986. As of this date this is also True. The reason is/was that the classes (for flatheads) was for American produced engines. There is an effort being made to allow them; mainly because they are a "carbon copy" of the American engines, (including Canadian and Austrailian - manufactured until 1954) with the exception of the accessory drive at the rear of the block.
I have a couple of those engines, and run them for 5 years now, they run great! The most imnportant point on french flaty, is the center main cap! bigger than american ones! I have some for sale...
I talked to a really nice guy at the Revolution that had just bought the whole lot. Currently, the motors are in College Station, TX... BUT, the guy had just bought a bunch of Ford F550 trucks to haul em all back to NorCal with. I know he was talking about building a website and getting business in order to start selling them again.
Well Namco in the UK has a stock of them, plus they've been offered another consignment from France so I guess "all" is a relative term...
Apparently Revolution and Vern Tardel have formed a "partnership" and will start selling the French Flatheads (and parts) via a NEW website. (address unknown at the moment) From what I was told, French 4" cranks are NOW as "rare as hen's teeth!"
