Those snow-covered stations bring back a lot of memories of pumping gas during the winter in Portland. Back then the handles didn't have rubber covers on them, just cold hard steel and the gas made them even colder. You could wear gloves, but you had to remove them to make change or run a charge card and separate the carbons. Add an east wind and you have the makings of a miserable night shift. Ho, ho, hum bug.

    Another Rte. 66

Here is a photo of the "Safety First Tire Co." & filling station in the Route 66 city of Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1930. It was one of the original filling stations in the city. There is a lot to see in this photo.
We understand that this was the manager and attendants, Safety First Tire and Oil Company, 222-224 N. 4th Street, circa 1930

Here is a photo of City Route 66 at 12th Street at Chouteau, St. Louis, Missouri with both a White Castle and Mobilgas service station, circa the early 1950s.

    North Carolina, 1939...

Country filling station owned and operated by tobacco farmer. Such small independent stations have become meeting places and loafing spots for neighborhood farmers in their off times. Granville County, North Carolina...

Just for fun, we take you off of Route 66 to San Marcos, Texas with this photo of a service station that sells second-hand tires as well as gas, circa 1940
