I just picked these up, anyone got a set or used them ? I was told this set is intended for two 2barrels but they would have to be back to back for this to work I'd guess like those on the 4 barrel adapters.
This the picture I bought them off of... * Now having them in my hands and being only about an inch and an eighth across, it is more apparent that they have to be for the four barrel as has been pointed out. Thanks guy's...
That's a mechanical secondary conversion for a holley four barrel. The gear part was kind of sketchy though.
Thanks... I got the idea from a machinist buddy and was actually looking for some sort of donor to make a similar set of gears instead of cutting something new looking. Most of my build parts are Eelco but I've never seen any of these...
Kind of looks like a kit that was sold to convert a holley 4-barrel into a double pumper. you had to drill a hole in the choke housing so the long tubes would feed the secondarys.
Makes sense, I wasn't sure if it was directly related or just grouped that way for sale... I didn't get many answers with it but really only cared about the gears and Eelco brand. *Thanks for the all the replies...
Nope. They pop up on ebay every once and a while and without any catalogs handy I can only guess they originally came out in the mid to late sixties.
That's where I got these... I'll have to do some more digging but I have not found any listings yet. The script is the earlier type block letter style so I'm hoping for at least a 64-65 date. Thanks again...
I just checked a picture of the car I had that kit on. It is dated 1967, and I know it was a well known kit then, so 64-65 should be rite.....Beet
The eelco mech secondary one i have on my daily looks nothing like that, it's just a cheep piece of L shaped tin and a long bolt, nut and spacer. They are really crude and dont really act all that smooth about halfway through the 2ndarys As for when mine came out, ive seen photo's in a 66-67 magizine
I also had that setup on a holley in the 60's. As reported it was sketchy at best. What someone said about it being a poor performer on the top end of the throttle travel is also correct. Just when you need an enhanced richening the most the accelerator pump was almost out of travel resulting in a leaning of the mixture. The addition of a 50cc pump would have helped with the leaning but I don't think the larger capacity pump was available at that time. frank
Thanks again for all the replies... Sounds like they died out for a good reason. I still need to get these in hand to do some measuring but I would like to find another pair of gears if possible.
That's a mechanical secondary conversion for a holley four barrel. The gear part was kind of sketchy though. ****************************************************************** Yeah, 'sketchy'. Buddy of mine ordered a new '63-1/2 Ford fastback, 427 side oiler. He sent his Holly carbs down to Les Ritchey (Performance Associates) for this modification. The carbs and distributor (improved drag race advance curve) made a notable difference, but the gears wore out the throttle shaft bushings in 3 months.
Motion Performance in Long Island (Baldwin-Motion) used those kits on their "Phase III" 427 Camaros, Chevelles & Novas; especially on the big Holley 3 barrel carbs. Strictly a performance gimick and not worth a damn for everyday street driving. Worked OK at wide-open throttle (street racers loved them for some reason ) but WAY too rich at any cruising speed unless you're running something like 5.38 rear gears! Seems like Mr. Gasket also made a similar gear-drive secondary kit.
I didnt think about it when i first posted, but these are for 1 to 1 operation, whereas the tin one i was talking about is normal progressive 2ndarys
Thanks again for the replies. I had other plans than the intended use for these but have come up with a different approach. If anyone has interest they are now forsale or trade.... Otherwise I might try them on a 4 barrel at some point just for fun.
Did u find more parts ?? I'm getting into the 3 Barrel Holleys and I have seen those gears u had pictured installed on some !!! I'm actually looking for some old items to use on a 3 barrel Holley
Pretty interesting actually. Lengthen the runners for corners and shorten the runners for the straights ? Without a computer to actually do the adjusting, sounds like a lot of work while driving, to make it...work ! Mike
It may have just been a "what if" flow bench test intake, but, if that was on a running engine, I can't get past the HIGH PROBABILITY of those gears losing a set screw!
They did. I used that kit on a drag car with two Holley 600s on a TR-1 intake on a 327 SBC. When I heard Mr. Gasket was sued because a spec of grit in the gears caused them to bind in a open throttle condition I went in a different direction.
