It is probably parked sometime in the future. There are probably a lot of people there that might want to come back to this time to get things for the future!

Lots of people here have things they would to go back in time for. Imagine that same deal with most of the people of the world, through all of time. What about the number of people that might want to go and have a look into the future? Imagine if you could see what "collectibles and investments" will be valuable 5 or more years from now?

I suspect the waiting list for using the time machine is pretty long. Might need the time machine to get back the time you were on the waiting list to use it.... Will your allotted use time of the machine come before you die?

Who you have to contact to get on the list to use the time machine might be the most important question to ask. Who is the time keeper for the time machine? How would we contact him (or her)?

What about duplicates? If 1 can be built, surely multiple iterations are possible. And going forward, they would be exposed to the latest technology, so the newest versions would be more capable.

I'd still just go back far enough to get in on Microsoft and Apple. Oh and maybe gold at $35/troy ounce. That would be perfect for buying the stocks after all. I know, endless loop... I did that once in Fortran programming. The computer center wasn't amused!

Id go back to '52 if i dont die of polio, smallpox, or something else im not immune to it'll be a fun seeing life how it actually was back then, i think id bring a few books with me, make some bets that i know will win.

if that doesnt work, since im 18 i'd need to find a way to get a ssn that existed back then. my current wouldnt exist for another 50 years. or maybe id work odd jobs, no need for an ssn, pay only in cash, no checks. once i save up enough (hopefully i will have 8000 dollars by 1957) i'll change history a bit... i'll buy a nice enough house in the countryside (my parents house sold for 4300 in '55 so feasible enough), order a yellow and gold 1957 ford fairlane 500, with a 3 speed, and F code option, no power steering or power brakes, etc. then i'd buy something cheap i wouldnt mind to drive in winter, probably a beetle.
id probably bring some things that don't exist yet, some photos, etc, compare to how it will be.

I'd convert everything to gold so I could convert it back to 1957 money, grab me an Almanac with a list of all the Derby winners (Back to the future), and I'd stay there and not come back............

 

So, if we all get a shot at using a time machine, let's agree on a time and place to gather, and work together to get the most out of the trip. I can imagine taking individual tasks. For instance I'll collect as many of the Ardun heads as possible. Someone else gets the V8-60 axles. Someone gets all the Kinmont brakes, etc.

We then pool the resources and divvy up the bounty. Yes we'll have to figure out how to get old money, not insurmountable. And not cross timelines. (I've watched way too much Dr. Who...). Oh well, we can bench race this forever...

I would go back to the Fall of ‘63, McMinnville, Oregon. I was 15, and a guy named Jimmy Oxley was selling his red oxide 34 coupe. It was arrow straight with Westcott rear fenders, and all 51 Merc running gear. It had blue and white, flat Naugahyde interior, and needed a driveshaft and wiring. The price was a hundred bucks and a ‘27 roadster body sitting on a stepped A frame went along with the deal. It might as well been a million, to this kid.

 

According to the online inflation calculator, that hundred dollar '34 Ford would cost $983 in 2023 dollars. Crazy money!

If you have access to a time machine, you can certainly figure out how to get a Miura, Daytona, Cobra, Swindler II... and so on!

For me, I'd be searching the classified ads and picking up a few historic race cars that were offered for pennies on the dollar to "get it out of the way."

 

How big of a time machine would one have to have to bring a complete vehicle back?

The only practical thing I can think of is to accumulate as much vintage currency as you can afford at present and then go back, find a lawyer that will go along with the scheme, and set up a trust for yourself and populate it with the proper stock positions. Then come back and collect (and pay the taxes).

You do all remember that we've had this discussion before.....right? I think someone else covered it in this thread, too, but the biggest problem in "going back" is the currency. Just where in tarnation are you gonna find a few fistfuls of 20's to 50's vintage bucks?

Mine wouldn't really bring anything back. I would have a Thanksgiving or Chirstmas dinner with the with past family and ask my grandfather not to sell the Stude wagon till i got home from the navy.
