I have a ‘32 Ford with a 392 Hemi & an 8:71 blower. I need a new distributor & they don’t make a Mallory anymore for the 392. I’m looking at 2 options: 1) Hot Heads Hemi sells an adapter for use with a Chevy distributor. Or 2) a guy on eBay sells a small block mopar distributor that is modified to fit the 392. Which would you guys recommend? Or something else? I’m really confused on getting something. Thank you! Bill
I want to use a pertronix kit in it & the model number is gone so don't know which one to order. thank you! I was thinking I'd use a Mallory Chevy distributor. thank you!
Why not just use a new intermediate shaft from Hot Heads that uses a normal small block distributor . That shaft is easy to switch out . Tommy
It can't be so hard to ID a Mallory distributor...that you have to buy a whole new distributor. How many kits do Pertronix have for Mallory distributors? (I have Pertronix in a Mallory YL)
Whats wrong with the Mallory shown, Just wanting to use the Pertronix kit, Its been a while , Is the Unlite kit still available, I covered a distributor years ago before they even made kits , also you can cut that distributor or stock Mopar in half extend the housing and the shaft or swap distributor head and get the head of your distributor above blower bearings, Or purchase or make blower intake plate and move the blower 1 inch forward or more
With some good pictures I have no doubt that the many knowledgeable folks here could identify that Mallory. Looks like an earlier YL series. Someone with the right year catalog can look it up the number.
This is going to be the least popular suggestion. Find the right distributer. We hunt parts all the time, that is part of the game. The right distributer is out there and someone does not need it as much as you do.
The 'long' intermediate shaft assembly and an LA dizzy is almost too easy but, like others have said, rebuild what you have. The other option may be to use an oem 392 with electronic guts for the vintage look.
A set of marine points and a good marine grade cap will make that old Mallory better than the new Chinese crap one anyway!
Look for a Mallory YC337A, or the later production 3733701, your current distributor looks like the 3733701, but either will work. BTW, if you find a 337 with no cap your current cap, and probably rotor too, will work on the older 337.
6/71, AC Delco Chevy distributor, Hot Heads adapter. Ignore the rest of the inexplicable things you see. You have an 8/71, which I believe is 0.90" longer in the case. That should still clear just fine. That said, there is little reason to not rebuild your existing distributor.
@gimpyshotrods , I think a plus for you was the H/H adapter shifts the blower forward, the OP doesn’t have that advantage.
A GM/Ac cap will not clear from pic Op posted , Unless blower case moved forward on intake shown , There is other option can be used other then what was asked in Op original question If Op wants to use modern spark control you could take out the points or unite module install a crank trigger and still keep the advancement in the distributor, not HAMB friendly but solves a problem
I've got an original 392 chrysler distributor that is electronic and has tach drive if that'd help you. It need total rebuild, I'm going with a magneto in my 392. It has a small cap, it wouldn't surprise me that it was made by mallory for chrysler, it has their look to it.
I had another look at the distributor and realized it is set up with a 'Hall Effect' pickup and it'd required an ignition box. I think somebody grafted an early Chrysler CD ignition system into this distributor, its a neat package but not what you'd want I expect. Sorry about that.
I don't know, the one for a Mallory YL. I know that sounds obvious, but I installed it 20 years ago. It's just the basic Ignitor. Could have been this one. https://outlawspeed.com.au/shop/prt5809
Thank you for all the reply's everyone! I ended up getting 2 Pertronix kit's. #'s ML-182 & ML181. According to Pertronix it should be one or the other of those kits. The Hot Heads Chevy to Hemi adapter raises the distributor 3 3/4" but that's not enough. If that would have worked I could have run a new Mallory Chev Distributor in my 392. Everyone probably already knows this, but in case not, Mallory doesn't make a distributor for the 392 anymore. Thanks again for all the reply's! And here's wishing everyone a Happy New Year! Bill
Did you ever find the distributor you were looking for? I have a unit light in my 392 now and I’m thinking of going over to MSD because the car. I’m putting it in is already pre-wired. I have the complete set up, coil, ignition box, and distributor I would consider selling.
