I am thinking of buying a 28 spline posi third member from Speedway. Any comments pro or con? I do not want a whiny rear third member.
Gear noise, in my experience, is largely a factor of how well the pinion depth and backlash is set up. That is a Human Resources issue, rather than a parts one. Que the guys that are going to tell you that you will surely die if you don't run 31-spline axles (or larger).
X2 with quick performance suggestion. They will build you whatever you want, reasonable prices and easy to deal with. I would definitely suggest upgrading to the hard plastic diff case for shipping protection.
If the mechanic can not set up a 9 I’m not to whine with new gears , I think he is never goin to make full pay grade
The O.E. Ford gear sets usually pattern nicely and are quiet. I understand that the aftermarket ring and pinion sets available these days are notorious for being noisey but I have no first hand experience with them.
I got my latest 9 inch center from Quick Performance. Reasonable price, Quick service, Runs quiet. They do have one little gimmick I fell for. When I ordered they told me it would be 6-8 weeks but for an additional fee of how much I forget I could have it in a week. I needed it to complete a project so I bit. If your in no hurry they're an excellent source for a 9 inch center.
Mine is from QP as well, 28 spline since my axles were fine. AND...I got a cool decal . IIRC delivery was in under 3 weeks.
9” are about the easiest gear set there is to set up. We use them to teach students how pinion depth and backlash affect gear pattern, because they are so easy to adjust.
Honestly Jim, differentials and transfer cases are two of the simplest components in a vehicle but it seems two of the most feared by people.
All i did was ask specifically about Speedway motors experiences with their third members. Sorry for the cluster#%&!
Listen to Saltracer. Some brands are quieter than others, albeit more costly. I would ask a couple of vendors, like Quick, Currie, and others to develop a consensus. Buying cheap likely leads to buying twice if you’re after something quiet.
For a lot of us Speedway products (not other outfits name brand parts) are the last resort because we can't get it through regular channels parts unless we are running a circle track car. Maybe it is anti facebook rodder syndrome where too many of those guys think that Speedway is the only place in the world you can get a hot rod part. As others said, nine inch rears aren't hard to set up right but my experience says they can be a tad tedious if you don't have a high degree of patience. 1149.99 for an OEM case with a posi and new gears all ready to go is interesting if you don't have anything to work with though. Looking on Summit with a Summit brand ring and pinion and limited slip carrier and a Richmond gear install kit the tab runs 804.97 just for the base price parts without the case. It doesn't take long to make one of those ready to go units look pretty good.
Maybe he has a no differential/pumpkin in his 9inch? Maybe doesn’t have experience setting up gears? Maybe prefers to just install the damned thing and get on down the road, not spend the time to say “I did it myself”. Why buy a ready to fit transmission mount/crossmember etc? Surely it can be built at home for less money.
