It rained Monday morning and it was really windy, lost the tops of three dead Ash trees. One just clipped the gutter on the house. Vikings didn't have chainsaws neither do I so I split things into easy to carry quarters. Wonder what they looked like flying to the ground? '37 Ford frame X member and frame table trailer were under the mess but untouched. Free fire wood, good day. Bob DSCF7730.JPG DSCF7726.JPG

The top wood kit for my Steelback is made of Ash. Getting good stuff is a problem now, there is some bug that has destroyed all the useful Ash trees, my kit was one of the last the maker supplied.

I read the Eric Sloan book "Reverence for wood" so much history about the use of wood from Colonial times. Descriptions of the forests that no longer exist and the many kinds of wood and which ones were used for which purposes. Very interesting.

There is a Sloan Museum up Route 7 about 45 minutes from me in Kent, Ct. They just finished rebuilding a replica log cabin from the 1700's. One big room with a loft, nothing fancy. They plan to have more craftsmen using old tools to show how things were done 200 years ago.

He wrote some very interesting books. Diary of an Early American Boy described the evolution of a homestead and a boy who lived there. I need to get these back out. I'd like to visit that museum.

@The37Kid I always look at this thread when it pops up, I love the ramblings, & @Six Ball I love your thread for the same reason.
You guys are people who make the HAMB a place I keep coming back too.

Yeah, this little bastard right here. The Emerald Ash Borer from northeastern Asia. When I lived in Michigan, there were a lot of old Ash trees on my place killed by these guys. You could pull the bark away from the tree trunk and see how they destroyed the tree. There were tunnels everywhere under the bark.

Don't you wonder if any of the invasive species are by accident. We have a moth here that kills the pines. I got an on demand water heater that's advertised to be from Mexico. It came from China and had several big live bugs inside the box. I killed the bugs and sent the whole thing back. Should have thrown in a few rattlesnakes.

It's crazy when they make so much fuss about some things & so little about what makes a difference....

@The37Kid Bob, I've been trying to make some room in there to make it easier for you to work.

It all matters but these are also here and they are fighting them...people specialize in this...but it’s a hard battle that's constantly changing and moving...Six ball's experience is sad...even working in industry with transportation between our great nations has unwanted tradeoffs...it's not always offshore so to speak...I saw one of the Emerald Buggers this year but it disappeared as I went to try to identify it...shoulda clobbered it...

Our future is constantly evolving...so are we...get those Hotrods built turn the key and blow em' away with the dust fumes!!

  17. Bob, i hope the only change isn't your flat work space being used for other things.:D JW

Personally, I don't believe in accidents! It's all pre-meditated carelessness.

Thanks Carter! I owe you one. Posting the "Like" to the above photo made me look at it and see that red umbrella bracket I've been looking for for a good part of the day. Proof it was in the basement , but moved to a shelf in another room.

Bob, I just read your post from the beginning to the end. Quite impressed with your story. I bought my 34 five window back in 1964 at age 16 for $50 from a guy that ran it on the Jersey beach as beach buggy. Had no drive train, just a body and frame. Three boys, college etc. never finished it just kept moving it around from garage to garage. After 44 years and retired I chose to sell it and buy one "done". Well fortunately my wife insisted I work on the car and finally getting it done. Only question she had was how much $$ would it take? Told her I had no idea (who does) but glad she supported my decision to complete this journey. Took great pleasure working on that car and seeing it come together. Unless you have done that you can never feel the satisfaction it entails. And of course once bitten by the bug had to build a AV8 roadster. That's me in car number 628 TROG 2022.Good luck with the roadster

Great looking Coupe, glad you finished it. My very first old car a '26 T Tudor that would up with a Touring body raced in a TROG event about 5 years ago.

This was my 55th HERSHEY Swap Meet in a row, found the only pair of original'32 rails on the fields. Winter project is to add the '37 X member and Model A front & Rear crossmembers. Then I can finally start making the subrails fit. :) DSCF1214.JPG DSCF1253.JPG DSCF1249.JPG

No he's not, those rails need electrical work. You were NOT at Hershey, I was. Talked to Debby and Bobby had a hand full of cash.

That's house electricity, and I just used some looking for frame numbers. Goal is to have the body finished and in primer, same with the Steelback. Whenever that happens I'll be out of time to wiring anything. No use worrying about things that can't be done.

That would be a great topic for another thread. How many parts do you need to claim you have a "project" ? I bought a 1915 T windshield at Hershey to go with the engine I found in 1964................:)

Thanks, I have followed the Pinetree event here on the HAMB. Forget how old my oldest Grandson was when I bought a copy of your book for him, 12 now and we used his wagon to retrieved the '32 rails from the Green field.
