I am trying to locate pictures of how the back up light switch/bracket is mounted in a '59 Ford Custom 300. It's the original manual 3-speed (6 cyl swapped to 292 y block) and there is no external brackets or switch on the transmission nor have I found any bracket or switch on the column at the shift linkages. I am installing a wiring kit and want to account for the switch and realized I don't see where it should go. Any input appreciated.

  2. I had a '59 Ford in the late '60s. In cold weather the backup light switch would stick in the on position. The switch was mounted to the column or the firewall by some sort of bracket and was actuated by the column shift lever under the hood.

Remember that backup lights weren’t standard equipment on cars until many years after your 59 Ford was made. They were an option, but it being a low trim level car they probably weren’t ordered by the original owner.

Yessir, that is what I am referring to. Thanks! Just trying to get an idea of how it mounts to the column. The NOS part I'm looking at on ebay comes with a bracket and I could not picture how/where it installs. Any chance of a side profile pic to see how the bracket attaches and switch engages?

Thanks for the reply, you are correct. I'm ***uming this may have been an option on the car as there were bulbs in the back up light sockets as well as wires ran to them, but it's only an ***umption. Could have been PO added, but I never found a switch when removing everything.

That looks modified, but usually there is a Clamp type bracket with a U bolt and the bracket has a spot for the switch, bolted on with two screws, maybe that is a manual trans one?

Are you all stock drivetrain-wise? if you have a C4 you can mount on the shift lever

    lightened it up for you

sorry for the low quality. The column pictured is an automatic in my 59 Ranchero. None of my custom 300s have had back up lights. The greasy column is a 3 speed coin in my 300 parts car, not wired, appears to have a cover IMG_20240104_120839.jpg IMG_20240104_121038.jpg IMG_20240104_121018.jpg

I have one that uses the bolts on the transmission door to hold a bracket with an on/off switch that attaches to the reverse shift lever via a long weak spring
