I want to use my old 12 spoke spindle mount americans on the street.. Any one installed rotors on these wheels with success. There's not much of a boss on the wheels to drill and tap plus I'm a little skeered to drill and tap magnesium. The car is a '32 5 window with blown 354. Say it can be done
I wouldn't run those on the street, too much chance of damage to the wheel and If they are the thinner 12 spokes I don't believe the tires (width/size) are meant to carry the engine chassis loads, especially side loads you'd see while street driving, they were meant for 1/4 mile hops down the strip not freeway & side street driving? I maybe wrong? just my $ .02 Paul
Check with www.chassisshop.com, or Mark Williams Ent or Strange Engineering. You need spindle mount type brakes. A brake system balance valve should be used with all that weight in the front. A blown 354 hemi could weight as much as 800 lbs or more.
Just some ideas, but I kinda have a problem running a 40 year old spindlemount on the street. In fact, I have trouble running a 40 year old magnesium spindlemount on a 130 MPH race car. Larry T http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=336541
It can be done, but like the picture above 15'' spindle mounts with front brakes look like shit... DW on here has some 18'' spindle mounts with some real small disc brakes and they look really good and did not hurt the look of the 18'' spokes at all. A 32 coupe with a blown hemi better have a 4 speed... I run magnesium 12 spokes on the street without front brakes and it doesnt bother me at all.
Thanks for the info and pics Larry. E.C. I gotta agree they look like shit and you're a bad influence!!!! I'm still on the fence.
I run them On my flathead drag car. It is a VERY light car . Weighing it at 1380 lbs. and I run 1/8 mile at about 85 mph. It has been on the track and street for about 3 years with no problems.
I saw some were ( maybe here ) they were turned to take a aluminum ring and then right at the seam were the ring pressed on they were drilled ( maybe milled ) with holes and the threads were in both halves locking them in place then drilled further out for the rotors . I have a set of 15" and Id be scared to wreck them but man I wish they had brakes sometimes for the altered I'd like to build and run in 300 foot drags they have near here.
Check out Brian's @racer-x's rebuilding after the crash thread. I believe he shows the process. His 5 spokes look killer but they're not the wagon wheel style 15" or 18". @JimSibley's are the first i can remeber seeing. They look good. Haven't seen that car before. Great looking hotrod.
