Fairly well used 1949 Chevy 2dr Styleline.. 10 year old car 1958...
15 year old kid and bought it with my Oregonian Newspaper route money
for $ 100.00... took 4 months to earn it...and another year until 16 to drive it.
Car names were popular in Eugene in those years so called it "C Note" for the 100 bucks RDR 49 59 Dec.jpg
First of many 49- 52 Chevys in my life.

    My first car...

    my50plymouth.jpg
'50 Plymouth sedan in Shore Green. In 1976 when I was 15, I went searching in Kentucky for an old car to fix up since there were a lot of rust-free machines there (as opposed to my home in Chicago). Found it parked along the road in West Paducah - green with 72K on it, ran good but had a little rod noise, and an older gentleman named Lapoleon Bridgett was asking $360. I held out two $100.00 bills and got it. My uncle and I drove it home and stored it in my grandmother's garage until I could afford to get it fixed up enough to safely drive the 400 miles home. Unfortunately that day never came; four years later my grandma's house got taken by eminent domain by Baptist Hospital and my mother sold the car to a restorer in Kevil for what I paid (and the clutch was seized by then). Hope it did survive... BTW those wheel covers were rare: '56 Hudson Rambler (like regular Rambler but with an H instead of an R in the center). I sold them to a Hudson collector about twenty years ago. Still have its 1975 Kentucky license plate and trunk handle...

1957 Morris Minor! Much to my parents disgust I scalloped it and white walled the tires. That was 1984 when I was 17.

    65 Polara.jpg

This is not my car, but it's remarkably close to what I purchased in 1976 at age 15. It was a '65 Dodge Polara pursuit 413 car. I was first owned by the CHP and my buddy Gene's dad bought it from the CHP. His dad would make note of the fastest cars he drove while on duty and then buy them at auction. He bought this one at some point and years later parked it. I bought this jewel for $250 and it was in a lot better condition than the one in the photo, it was no longer black with white doors, it was repainted some sort of blue, but it was terribly oxidized. Adding to the cool factor, it had the heavy steel "push bars" on the front bumper. Drive train was the 413, a 727******* and an 8 3/4" diff with 3.23s in it.
On first start up it rattled and clattered terribly. I filled the crankcase with a combination of ATF and diesel and let it idle on that to break up some of the varnish and worse. It came around quite a bit but it smoked like a freight train. At my dad's suggestion we did a "ring and bearing" job on it. That really woke it up. It ran pretty good. I cut off the quiet exhaust and put on some cheap glass packs. When I got a "fix it ticket" for noise (didn't take long.) I put some perforated steel just ahead of the bolt on glass packs and got it signed off. And then removed the baffles. I put some used Cragar mags on it but was ceaselessly harangued by my buddy. He was not a fan.
It was a great first car. I did crash and total it but that came out OK. I bought a Charger with a blown engine and swapped the 413 into that. Put an Edelbrock "Torker" intake, 750 Holley and headers on it. It really woke the old gal up. Ran like a scalded cat. Until I crashed that one too.
That's when I started racing karts. Definitely needed to learn car control.
