  2. Empty.
A junkyard vw engine was drained then ran. It was a contest at a air cooled engine show. Whoever guessed the closest time won some $$$$

ran longer than I thought it would. But I guess a worn out engine should.

Yes, that’s what it sounds like.
Weren’t they the first ones to create it??
I just thought it was an interesting post.
I wasn’t aware that all synthetics werent made the same.

Synthetics started to be developed toward the later part of the 1800s. Standard Oil started with some around the 1920s in the US. Either Mobil or Amsoil were the first to really market it 1970s?
Edit: Should note if you're talking Group IV, that did come into development in the 1970s. I do Believe.

Yeah those were fun to watch, back when a guy could buy a brand new engine case for a couple hundred bucks. Some lasted just a few seconds, some would just not die!
But even the vw world has caught up to the domestic market in recent years and old stuff is worth too much to destroy it just for show.

  8. Does that mean reserves of crude oil used for manufacturing lubricants have declined significantly?

I run synthetic in my cowl steering because it helps me turn my radials on my OT wheels, which @Moriarity keeps deleting the pictures of!

    Oil good, no oil, bad.

  11. "SY swore by synthetic oil for years".

I have personally never run synthetic oil in anything. I am still alive. The same can't be said for SY. Just sayin';)

    Can't help myself sometimes

  14. Do people buy synthetic oils because they are true PAO's or because they perform better than traditional oils? IMO it is not a scheme in the sense of fooling people if they perform as advertised (better than traditional oil)as most people don't have a clue or probably give a rats ass about the actual chemical differences.

I'm quite happy with Mobil 1 in my more modern cars. I can tell you that synthetic lube in truck transmissions work .When Fuller offered a 250,000 mile warranty without synthetic lube and 500,000 with synthetic lube you knew something was up. The wear I observed in transmissions with traditional lubes compared with units running synthetic lubes was night and day. Non- synthetic lube tended to oxidize and gum up . Whereas the synthetic lubes left parts relatively free of residue.
transmissions and differentials tended to run cooler.....from a lack of friction while providing sufficient support without breaking down the molecular structure of the lube.

Ignorance is bliss and to each is their own. Obviously for what this site is based around you don't need synthetics, the motors, diffs, etc. weren't designed for it. There is a reason for it. If oil is oil, a filter is a filter, then an engine is an engine. Debate is the same whether it is synthetic vs conventional, fram vs wix. Full syn ruins a older motor and leaks, but good luck buying a newer vehicle and putting 20W50 or a 10w30 conventional in it. Guarantee that doesn't workout for you.

It is getting hard to find engine oil that does not say Synthetic on the bottle! What is an old time guy to do? I do not want to run synthetic in an engine that has had nothing but 10w30 Wolf's Head since new and has 150k on it now!

  28. Suck Squeeze Bang Blow. I have never told any engine that there was more expensive stuff than the cheap 20W-50 I have been running for 50 years. What they don't know hasn't hurt them yet.

Ya know.....sometimes I can't help but wonder......Where does all this "man-made" and "synthetic" stuff come from? Have ANY of you EVER seen a man conjure up some material out of thin air, as if he were a God or something?

Seems to me that we have to start with SOMETHING from nature, in order to get to all this "man-made" stuff. We have silicone....is that truly "man-made"? Are "synthetic" lubricant's truly "man-made"? I suggest not. We may be able to refine, and re-refine materials into something seemingly different, but SOMEWHERE, we had to start with something out of the ground or out of a plant.

    Just my thoughts.....Roger

    You guys crack me up...
Seriously though I run full synthetic in my everyday.
    But....in my 56 Packard with a 72 Buick 455 I plan on running dino.
I wonder if I should add zinc, anyone have an opinion?
