Very disappointing situation. My good buddy took his tube axle to John Wright at Quality Plating to be chromed. Many of us know that plating is only as good as the preparations. Kinda like a paint job. Before taking the axle to have it plated, he prepped it. He is very ****, so the prep work was excellent. The price he was quoted, was $800.00 to $1200.00. This was a couple of months ago. He got a call Monday and was told they made a mistake. Now it is going to cost $2000.00 +. Very discouraging. He told them to ship it back. We are both holding our breath hoping he gets his axle back and not someone else's.
Not to be confused with Jon Wright Plating. That's seems excessive to say the least. Let us know what your new plater charges. Here's some good info. on hydrogen embrittlement. Projects - Chromed front axels | The H.A.M.B. (jalopyjournal.com)
Well,if you make that big of a mistake-you don't know what you are doing and you should eat the cost. Hope it works out. Try Librandi's near Harrisburg.
When I was in the ch***is business for 40+ years and one thing I did was to buy was many of the ch***is parts as I could plated from the manufacturer. I had the identical parts in bare steel for the ch***is mock up and most of the time I had the plated parts shipped direct. Pete & Jake's was my major supplier and their quality control was great. Rarely had a chromed part that was not up to par. Toward the end I also bought suspension parts from Roadster Supply and their shiny parts either chrome or polished stainless were also a good quality. They can sell the parts preplated at a reasonable price because of the volume they do. Getting individual pieces done at a plater has gotten out of control both with price and lead time.
2k was around what they charged my old work place for a show quality front axle. Probably 13 years ago A completely new cnc machined axle. Looked great. Hate to hear you’re having an issue.
Important distinction there. Don't know Quality Plating, but Jon Wright's CustomChrome Plating is in Grafton, OH, not too far from Cleveland. They are not cheap, but they do top quality work and Jon is as straight a shooter as they come.
With the cost of plating what it is, I'll be buying parts at swap meets, FB, CL, that are already plated. I'll be talking to my buddy either today or tomorrow to see if he got his axle back. For those in the Pittsburgh, PA. area, I just got word that Paul's Plating that was in Mars, Pa. is closed up.
