Pretty cool Moriarity, if I did it correctly L172162 translates to Thursday May 9 1957. I wish I never took it apart to make it better 33 years ago. Now that I have the money I don't have the ambition or health but we will keep on trying. Pat
55 Chevy production dates here https://www.trifive.com/d1/vin/55 Chev daily vins by plant.pdf 56 Chevy production dates here https://www.trifive.com/d1/vin/56 Chev daily vins by plant.pdf Thanks for starting this thread Moriarity [I though I was the only one that showed an interest in these sort of details]
Fifty years ago VIN's weren't part of the vocabulary, more concerned about finding a 4.11 posi or scraping together enough money for a new Hurst shifter.
Built August 22nd in Janesville as a coral 4 door sedan with a 235 and Powerglide. Some of the coral paint is showing but the rest of those things are long gone. Neat to know the build date, but what I'd really like to know is whose high school parking lot sticker is in the rear window, and are they the ones who painted it white with red pinstripes, orange fur door panels, and bondo'd shut back doors to try to give it a 2 door look (redone since then). That's the time period I'd really like to know more about as far as this car goes. I got it at an auction in '05 for $300 with no history attached.
