My big 62 Pontiac Safari has 15 inch basic steel wheels that I pieced together. They are all the same size but not quite all the exact same design. All are disc brake wheels. They may be different mfgs, I really don’t know.

The biggest difference is 3 of my 4 have four knobs for outside grip hubcaps.

the 4th only has 2 knobs.

I bought a set of baby moon 10-1/8 caps. They fit the 3 with four knobs but I can’t for the life of me get the last one to fit that two knob wheel. Or I can but it pops off at the slightest bump. Even though it seems like it’s designed to fit the same size hubcap.

Does anyone know is that 2 knob wheel is designed to fit a different size cap? Maybe it’s a ford wheel and the others are gm? Any tricks to making the cap fit?

I have an extra 4 knob wheel but then I would have to get the tire swapped and I would have to paint the wheel, which the cold ass conditions are conducive to.

Maybe, but I like definitive answers. I figure some old timer can tell me for sure what that two knob wheel is defined for cap wise and why my baby moons won’t fit. Even though it seems the right diameter.

  4. I personally have never seen a wheel with only 2, but that's not saying much.. how about if you modify a couple bolts, drill the wheel at the right spots and use said bolts as the needed knobs ? Or file 2 from some metal stock and tack them to the wheel..seems like more work than painting a wheel and a tire swap though, good luck, nice Poncho by the way. Mitch

Your 2 knob wheel may be for a full wheel cover. Unless your car is a DD eventually you have to paint the wheel and mount the tire………or run one side without caps.

lol that’s funny. Because I agree that’s the most obvious solution.

I meant I was hoping someone would shed some light on what the 2 knob wheel was from for sure. They all seem to have the same hub opening but I was hoping someone would be able to say “the two knob wheel is from a 70s for truck and the other ones are all gm wheels”.

Does it matter? I guess not, but I like to know things.

  8. My take is...

How easy or expensive would it be to replace a lost or damaged hubcap/moon? What will happen to your blood pressure if you lose a cap? I'd go the extra mile to get that fourth 4-nub wheel into the mix and forget the other one. But, I'm a stick in the mud that way...

That one was $12.50 at a swap meet so not that much.

what makes my blood boil is when things are supposed to be easy and they aren’t. Which is why I was seeking information. Specifically if that two knob wheel is designed for a different cap (and what kind) because the diameter seems right. I can whistle my way through a hard task, but if my tv remote freezes, when it only has one simple task, I lose my shit. Like just do the one thing you are designed to do. In this case hold on a hubcap.

Again, I agree I just need to spray paint that other wheel. Mostly I would just like someone to fill in the blank on that wheel type. Just because I like to know things.

Maybe @wheelkid has an idea what it’s from.

  12. Someone posted a tip about those bolt/rivet/weld-on hubcap spring clips not so long ago.
A couple of those sound like an easy-peasy, driveway project to me.

I've not heard of those but I’m interested. I’ll see if I can find it.

I think that was in a thread started by @flynbrian48 , if memory serves.

edit: I think in his thread it was to make a cut or two on the covers, so may not be the same information.

There are many sellers with slightly different origami folds.

I think you can flex them in or out to add or take away some of the tension.
They are for the 'dogdish' size, not 'wheel covers'.

I also have never seen a ‘2 knob’ wheel, so it would be interesting to know.

There are lots of threads on here about holding your hubcaps on with silicone, or double sided tape, etc etc.
But one of the most interesting comments (to me) was the comment about hubcaps coming off wheel rims that were designed for cross ply tyres, but actually had radial tyres on them.
Apparently the wheel flexes more so the hubcaps may pop off more readily ! ………..bttt
