I purchased a fairly decent 1935 Ford Model 48 5 window coupe. The door gl*** wasn't installed, though it does have what appear to be "late 35" regulators (6 bolt). Also included were new gl*** channels, new gl***, setting tape, and so on. What I am running into is the guide pins are missing from the channels (they are repop, though I have one oem but it doesn't have one either). So I am trying to find a source for them, but having no luck. Also, the gl*** seems to not fit the window opening well... Now, that being said, I have never worked on one of these cars so I am not sure how to manage my expectations. It seems to be short... as in: if the gl*** were to be fully seated in the channel, with the regulator at the top, I don't think the gl*** would even cover the window opening. I checked with some other guys, and my gl*** dimensions match what most of them have. I could get new gl*** and have it made taller (I work at a gl*** company) but I am not sure if that's the problem. Pics show the regulator all the way up and the gl*** just "sitting" on top of the channel. I feel like if I press the channel on, it will not be fully closed. Any help is greatly appreciated!
I ***ume you're the Wescott of "Westcott's Auto" where I screen shot that diagram? I just went back and looked... apparently the first 3 times looking through the parts list (before posting here) weren't enough. But on the 4th time through, I see this now, and am ***uming it's what I need? 48-45962-STUD Roller and stud for window channels 20.00 pr
Six bolt regulators are early '35. Sometime in '35 they moved they moved the door handle from the front to the middle of the door which made it necessary to move the window crank forward using the eight bolt regulators. Hard to exactly see where the window bottom is; but it does appear short. On my coupe the top of the metal channel is about even with the top of the inner door panel when the window is up and stays at that height when the window slides forward. When the window is down, the top of the gl*** is just below the edge of the outside of the window opening. Mine is a 3W; but I don't think the window up and down position would be different. I used an original '35 Ford window as a gl*** pattern. The only thing I had to mess with was the position of channel on the gl*** to get the roller stud to engage right and work the vent motion correctly.
I am wondering if we didn't have the gl*** slid forward far enough and that's why it seemed short at the top. With the channel even with the top of the inner door like you talk about, the gl*** just barely touched the outside top of the window opening in the door itself. And the gl*** wasn't fully seated in the channel. There was about 3/8 it still could go down to bottom out. I see that now. I saw the description on Westcott's page and misunderstood. My door handle is in the middle. So I should have the longer regulators for the handles to clear each other. I am not too concerned about that, but are there any other differences you are aware of?
This shows the top of the channel (gold "line" that's even with the inner door) and the bottom of the window (black setting tape)
The gl*** should be tall enough it fits up into the fuzzy channel enough to seal; but still be able to slide forward after it is up all the way to the close and seal the front. Usually pound the channel onto the gl*** with it laying flat on the bench. I looked at some notes and the hole for the roller stud was 15-1/4" from the front of the gl*** on my car; but I don't know if the relationship of the regulator to door opening is the same on a 5W as it is on a 3W as my doors are longer.
