Hey Groovers I'm just curious. Is anyone aware of any custom/taildragger style 39/40 Chevy Coupes that were getting around in the 1940s? The lions share are of course Fords, but you don't see many Chevys done at this time. Actually I can't find any. Would sure like to see some, if any did exist. Cheers!
According to Kustomrama, Ed Roth had a '39 he customized in '48, and a '40 powered by an Olds V8 he used as a tow rig in the '60s. James Dean had a '39 he was known to street race. No picutres of any of those, though. There are a few other custom '40s on there as well JR Bloom, 1951 Fred Crellar 1950
James Dean huh? That's pretty cool. Say, I find it strange that they'd swap out the grille on the 39. That's one of the slickest looking grilles out there.
You got to remember that in the late '40s it was just a 10 year old car, that looked like every other old car on the road. A lot of the custom work at the time was taking older, cheap brand cars and modifying to look more like newer nice brand cars.
