I was wondering who would be the first to say that. I'm glad it was you. I agree, show car...sure. Holy Grail of Hot Rods? Meh. It never twisted my nuts.

 

Fellas, don't get distracted by the minutiae.

It's an iconic show car that captivated readers, model builders, customizers, kids of all ages, and so on. It's absurd but so well done that it works.

It's great for hot rodding that it's back and going to get restored.

 

Ryan, the reason for my comment is that so many people refused to believe that that car existed because it had not been seen or heard for years. None of them had any basis for their critical sarcasm....just beating their chests.

 

Regardless. Where is their response?

I'm glad it's back out. One of my favorite show rods/hotrod. Here's a picture of me with the New Zealand built recreation/clone, or whatever you want to call it. This was at World of Wheels in Kansas City right before the whole covid pandemic bullshit started.

 

One's take on many things,is shaped,with what they know about the times it happened in. More so for those that were part of those times, vs anyone just looking back at it, even with a good history idea of all of it;;
Being I was actually ,also doing car shows with my own 2 cars, an had been doing so, in the start years ,as the super wild show car thing became a show trend* , starting near the mid 1950s ,getting wilder as it went! Even I saw some of them as,Way Over the Top! But liked some a lot! < Those are in some case's ,the same show cars, others hate,and I think a lot of that is, being part of it really happening, vs just looking back from a newer point of view. Eye of the times!!

I disagree. The biggest problem with those sort of paintjobs was there were so many coats applied, usually one after the other for the sake of 'depth' without a decent blocking between coats and then flake was applied with coat after coat of clear as well they were doomed to fail. Yes, they were only for a couple of shows and then repainted but probably over the previous shitty mess.
As for what's available these days the jury's still out on that one as far as durability goes.
Yes, I'm a qualified panelbeater / spraypainter by trade.

In that first reference article it stated Barris slapped the builder. I guess Will Smith’s slapping incident wasn’t original just a cheap ripoff!

 

What it looks like now shouldn't be surprising.

Neat! Hopefully, the "re-debut" might inspire some of the younger generation like it did 50 years ago.
Would be cool if they were able to get it running and drive it into the upcoming LA and Detroit shows.
The Barris sore loser side story is an interesting one I've never heard.

 

I completely agree withRyan, not my style at all. I never liked it back in the 60's either. It does have a cool engine. Glad they got it out but I'm not going out of my way to see it.

 

I liked / like the entire package, although the body does limit actual driving use. BUT the completed / painted / chromed / detailed chassis was pure magazine-cover porn, then and now.

 

Too bad he didn't punch Barris out. Obviously, a "sense of entitlement" isn't a new concept.

Steve's one-shot car outshines any Barris car for me - in fact, Barris is infamous in my mind for how he screwed up perfectly good hot rods with kitchy show bobbles-and-bangles BS...

 

Steve Scott built it. Scott "sold it to a friend in the early 80's. He was supposed to be restoring it, but he’s a very busy guy in the automotive world and that hasn’t happened. He’s confirmed that it’s in very good condition, stored in the barn at his home and vineyard in Northern California".

Beau Boeckmann owns it now and Beau got it from a Dick Nickerson. Did Nickerson purchase it from Scott and is he the person who had it tucked away for decades?

Edit: I read Steve Scotts blog on the car and wonder, is Steve still alive and will he be present with the car at the shows? Apparently he (Steve) had plans with a previous owner/friend to restore it and tour the shows with it. Possibly this Dick Nickerson person. Interestingly, Steve hasn't updated his blog since news of the car resurfacing has been made public.

 

Gotta admit though, not every Barris effort was an embarrassment to him.

 

I was never a huge fan of the 60's Show Rod's, but this car always drew my eye. It'll be great to see it restored to it's original appearance. I just wish I could get a couple of paint chips of every different color it was painted over the year's! Now THAT would be Cool!!! JMO!

From what I've been reading about the car, it was originally painted and Steve didn't like the color. Steve had it painted a different color shortly after its first paint job to cover up the color he didn't like. After he was done showing the car, it was loaned to a friend who parked it in front of his shop. The Southern California sun caused some of the paint to blister at which point the friend who had the car on loan had it painted and that's the color you see today. Apparently its only been three colors (not counting primer of course).

I always liked that car. looks like a cartoon. not a giant fan of most "show rods" but I'll make an exception for this one.
as for the patina look I'd like to see it cleaned up as good as it can get and running and driving at shows. you can always restore it next year.
when the Hirohata Merc was "found" I always thought it would be fun to take it to shows in as found condition, just get it running and driveable. same with this one....

 

I love it. Remember reading about the show rods in mags in the 60's and thinking "nothing like that here (in the Midwest)".
