Hi, I was wondering if someone could guide me where to get my lifters resurfaced in Oregon, I’m tossing a h&c sportsman into my 8ba and installing adjustable lifters, my options are adj iskys or Johnson’s.

I just sent a cam for a regrind and and set of lifters for re-facing off to Oregon Cam Grinding or a 153 Chevy II engine. Don't know the results yet but will say Ken was easy to talk with and very helpful on the phone. I'm hoping for good results.

Most old school motor rebuilders will be able to do that, the big guys that sold short and long blocks to shops and dealers. I have had some done that way. Lots of 'rebuilt' short blocks got reground stock cams and lifters in lieu of new ones, along with reground cranks. Only thing actually new were timing sets, pistons, rings and bearings.

I certainly don't expect any issues with re-faced or re-ground cam and lifters. The same parts were ground and finished during original manufacture so I don't see why it would present an issue giving the parts a new face. Oregon cam said that they feel the "old" materials are (in their opinion) of better quality than that used for current manufactured parts.

In Canada, I've had them resurfaced at Shadbolt Cams in Vancouver, B.C.

I guess success depends on the lifters being through hardened (which I think almost all are) vs. being only surface hardened.

I think pete1 here on hamb does them

  12. Do any of you guys know, if these places put the crown on the lifters, or just make them flat? Gene.

  13. I would hope they finish them with a crown. That’s what makes them rotate.

I had Shadbolt cams resurface my Johnson solids a little over a year ago. New cam broke in great. It’s under new management but the fellow I spoke with and performed the work seemed to be on the ball.

  15. Yep, that and the correct taper on the lobes. I had some mushroom lifters done a while back. The guy just made them flat... not happy. Gene.

Should the Johnson Adjustable lifters for a Ford Flathead be "radius" ground or flat.
This post got me thinking so I thought I'd ask.

All flat tappet lifters have a crown ground into the surface otherwise they will not rotate. It takes special radius grinding equipment to do this correctly, don't let anyone tell you otherwise! Call Oregon Cam and talk to Ken, he has been doing this for over 40 years.

  19. Lol,,,,I guess some people take the term flat tappet literally !

    Salt racer is right,,,,,,
Yes,,,,they must have a radius on the face to contact the lobe or they will wear badly .

Kind of like your road beds,,,,,they have a crown in them also,,,,otherwise the water won’t shed correctly .

I had my cam reground by them and Johnson’s solids resurfaced at the same time.

I know that the previous owner passed away last spring. I hope that they are still in business...

There is another operation up in Armstrong, BC I believe.

Can people show pics of lifters that various shops have done?

  22. Interior cam in Salmon Arm, I spoke with Jim there last week about my Hemi cam.

  23. Some lifters ride off center on the cam lobe making them turn.

Schneider Racing cams resurfaces lifters, I had a cam reground by Schneider and am very pleased, I did have new lifters (Isky) so didn’t have old lifters resurfaced. I believe prices start at $5.00 per lifter. I have some used factory Sbc lifters and if I ever build another Sbc I’ll send these lifters to Schneider to be resurfaced.

I had several sets of lifters done by Oregon cam. I think 73RR has a machine shop local to hem that does lifters.

We regrind lifters for engines we build, mainly Studebaker, Y-block, Cummins, 235"s, et al. Don't really need any more job work, but if you can't find anyone to do them for you, PM me. And yes, $5 each is the going rate.

Anybody ever heard of a coating called Anealon? A company named Mach Development in Maricopa Az and Tech Line Coatings in Murrieta Ca apparently have a ceramic coating that is 100% effective in preventing cam failure. This is from an old magazine . Apparently its not cheap, so I would think that most people would simply put that money toward a roller cam setup.............but then it occurred to me that some engines are difficult to impossible to get roller cams for. Supposedly this treatment does NOT require normal break in or light duty springs for break in.........just start the engine and its good to go .............(Thats what the magazine says):)

PackardV8, do you know if pretty much all lifters are regrindable (i.e. through hardened), and know of any exceptions?

  30. I can vouch for Oregon Cam Grinders as well. Have had them do a few 348 Chevy cam and lifters and they were flawless. No issues and lots of miles on them.
