Projects 1932 5w Coupe project continue

    Thanks, I can say same Danish and Swedish Bikes, Rods... "Strong Scandinavian Touch".

    Today Oskar welded. First Mig bottom and corner welding.
    Later after coffee break Tig. He told that Tig is not easy but good thing that not have hurry to weld....

    Grill is finished for paint. Can use with center trim or w/o.
    Trunk lid is not ready. Yesterday I continue working with it.
    Still takes one day weld, grind all over (+5meter welding in this lid).
    Also need to shrink with heat.... Im still hopeful that trunk lid is ready some day....

    Sorry, same poor pictures day after day....
    Project is forward slowly even I work there 5-8 hours every day.
    Now trunk lid is welded all over and grinded too. Over 5meter welding. Lid skin touch body when trunk lid is open.
    Tomorrow, Friday, I need to do something. Trunk lid is higher than original after I have made that "own figure".

    Driver side rain gutter need to weld too. Both trunk rain gutters were damaged, so I was remove those, hammered straight and installed back.

    Tomorrow I need heat up trunk lid skin. there is few "semi loose" area.

    Cold winter outside -> good time to work in Garage. Days are going longer here in North, so I have reliable inside knowledge that springtime is coming... Today is last very cold day (at this time)....

    Trunk lid is ready. Yesterday grinded and welded 4-5hours inside of trunk. Today few hour with trunk lid.
    Now works good and fits rather OK. Next is dash. I have some cardboard on my kitchen table. I make model how I change original dash. Im gonna use only one gauge, speedo.

    Need to check daily what old aircraft, race and orig. ford fitting/bolt/nut/washer -stuff I have.
    Very much also brass bolts, but maybe not use this car brass stuff.

    If somebody is interested in next stuff, Im ready to ship all over The Ball.

    - 1932 Roadster: Panel under seat
    - 1932 5w coupe dash insert with trim
    - 1932 panel under seat (steel)
    - 1932 5w rear window moulding (orig)
    - 1932 5w coupe door hinges
    - 1932 roaster panel after seat
    - 1932 pedal set
    - of course my own S-curve ford flathead lower radiator hoses

    maybe some more extra 1932 sheet metal or orther parts.
    Finland post shipping prices:
    -- 11cm x 60cm x 100cm = 70euro (~ 80usd)

    Oskar has friday afternoon quitar lesson in folk high school. After that he is come "welding lesson". He need to weld together three quitar floor stand. I have fit all hydraulic tubes ready.

    Dash is nearly ready. I like.
    No any switch or small gauges. Only speedo.

    Dash ready, just welded gauge mounting studs.

    Tomorrow Im gonna cut top.
    Voting! How much I chop?

    1) 3"
    2) 3 1/2"
    3) 4"
    4) +4" (4 1/4 - 4 1/2)

    I have chopped 2006 my ex 5w coupe. Im not sure how much I chopped. Top was already removed in USA when I bought project. I just welded it together and added missing pieces A, B pillar... Maybe it was 4 1/2".

    I like the simplicity of the dash.

    3 1/2” for me. I think your 5w was slightly too low.

    I agree. I was think same. I liked that 5w style. Now I want chop less... Maybe 3 1/2" is right.
    Tomorrow morning I "destroy" top...

    carbon foodprint is smaller after this job. Air resistance is smaller,.... litres per 100km less....

    I was couple of days on the road. Dayjob is not good thing. Takes too much time from hot rod building....
    32 top takes time. I want to make sure that all pillars (A, B), doors, top are as good placed as possible.
    Also good if windshield frame is fit on its place... My ex 5w coupe windshield height was dollar bill minus 1/4" .
    This winshield height will be dollar bill + 1/2" or near of that.

    I note that original top has made using 8pieces.
    What do You think, what is that original welding. It looks like gas welding, but maybe its not.
    Is it "battering welding" ?

    Top takes time. Small parts, measurements, welding, grinding,.... but after this week top is welded.

    For two small water channel, I made approx. 12" (30cm) long piece.
    When model was near right, I cut two 3/4" long piece.
    Today I have welded those pieces on their places. Tomorrow, Friday morning, continue with top.

    Today Tom Cirello is recharge my Harman Collins magneto magnets. I send rotor to CA + week ago. Here in Finland nobody can magnetize 8cylinder magneto.
    Today changed new Argon welding gas bottle from Linde (AGA). Argon gas is nowadays 20% expensive than before war in Ukraine.
    20kg Argon = 140euro ($150).

    Why did you split the top instead of laying "A" pillar back? I realise that laying pillar back is more work but would like your thoughts on this as you have the skills and ability to do "anything"
    I have an unchopped 32-5 and asked my metal man what he would do and he'd split the roof. I left mine unchopped as here in Australia most of the chopped 32-5 windows are fibreglass, so if it's not chopped it's got to be steel LOL
    I gather the split ends up at 3/4"
    Following your build closely and amazed and envious of your talent plus thanks heaps for posting your build here.

    Good question. My ex 5w I turned more A-pillars. It looks dam good, but style of car was different, I chopped more.... 1932 5w is problematic with upper hinge. It takes so much more time to remove hinge, if A-pillar angle is turned from all pillar lenght. Also need to make new "bed"/pocket for upper hinge because hinge pin need to be same line with lower hinge pin. otherwice door is not work. This car I like that I need to work with C-pillar so that there comes maybe 1-2decrees more angle. that part of top outlook is better than original.

    I like 1932 coupe original windshield frame/A-pillar angle and all 1932 5w top model/style. I mean, 1932 5w top is very very beautyful.Once I chopped 1934 5w (hinges rear) to Sweden. I made it more like "salt lake style" so I removed 3rd (upper) hinge, I cut cowl and top front and turned A-pillar heavily. I liked that. 1934 5w body style fits that "streamline"...

    Originally i was think that I m not gonna chop at all, but 1932 5w without fenders and high top looks like "tower" ,...very strange. 32 5w with fenders and high top looks very good, specially if car is lowed down.
    This car I want to look out more near original, traditional. I was think that I chop only 2.5-3.0" , then most of people wouldn´t know that top is chopped. I like quarterwindow style when it looks more long than high.

    There is also pic from Bakersfield. When I was lived couple of years in CA, I met this car many times there. I think this 1934 is coolest I have ever seen!!! I dont know owner, but I can say that this car is "timeless" and my pulse is going higher when I see pic.

    One pic we are drive down to Helsinki American Car show, where I had two of my 32 roadster in finnish hot rod magazine , V8 Magazine, stand. Yes It was cold before Eastern. I had so much clothes on... and my friend enjoy in my warm coupe and listen Dr.Feelgood ....
    FHRA (Finnish hot rod Association) never accept my 1932 5w to AmCar Show.... maybe we have here too many steel 1932 + 1964 DualQuad 409cid + Muncie 21 + Quick Change -hot rods..... Ou, how stupid those are there.

    update: found pic from AmCar Show 2014. We had "California beach" with roadsters in V8 Magazine stand.

    @AULIZ to be complimented by @swifty is a big deal, he has been hot rodding in Australia since nearly the beginning of - American Style - hot rodding over here, he is a legend & a true gentleman not to mention the owner & builder of some beautiful 'timeless' hotrods.
    @swifty I saw your new 5 window at the Reliability Run on the Friday night get together, it's a real credit to you ;)

    Love what your doing. So many get out a catalogue to build a street rod. Clearly you sat down, thought about it, put in some extra effort, and are building a hot rod that will be unique. Very cool.

    Thanks for the compliment Glenn, didn't realise that you were there . Had a lot of comments on the Friday night and got the "Test Run Pick" on the Saturday night which was a big thrill.

    Congratulations on the award, very much earned.
    I was only there 'visiting' on the Friday, you had a crowd around you when I saw you & didn't want to disturb you. I dragged a couple of mates along, they all had a good night. I drove the red n white Ranch up.

    Appreciate your time & effort to photo shoot & describe in detail as you progress with the 32, your description of the 34 & how it increased your pulse rate reaffirms that you are truly deeply engrained with the hot rod DNA . Always liked the broad pronounced body belt lines & reveals of the 32-36 years & as much as I like & own 32's the 33-34 years certainly reflect motion standing idle. Thanks for all the postings!     When I was Young american car owner middle of 80´s I decided that before Im 40y young, I start to built hot rods.
    Yes, I was 38 when i built my first 1931 coupe with 1932 frame, 331cid hemi+muncie in Pomona CA.

    Now feels that I have so much ideas and I like very much welding, grinding.... Yes, after one or two green pills You can grind 5-6hours ..... :)

    Sunday I picked up 1932 Roadster home. Same time fired 1955 cameo and 1965 GranSport.
    I sold on June 2023 that roadster to South-Finland. buyer never picked up car so I asked if I can sell car to Sweden. Finnish buyer bought 1932 twin spark plug cabriolet and this roadster one deal.

    Yesterday and today I welded and grinded drv door. Cold weather is coming from North --> Garage is best place be warm and work with hot rod project.
