Technical Storage shed parts. 368 Lincoln?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by anthony myrick, Jan 30, 2024.

  1. Friend might be building a model A. Told me he had a cool old engine in a storage shed

    looks like a 368.
Tach drive dizzy and the gauges.
    Those are cool
    IMG_6823.jpeg

  2. The trans is the biggest question. Never messed with one of these.
    2 or 3 speed?

  3. And he had some old hubcaps he said he doesn’t need
    IMG_6822.jpeg
I need a couple more of these.

  4. That looks like a MEL motor ( Mercury , Edsel, Lincoln) . Last time I saw one restored was in the engine bay of the GT51( which I will not discuss here) . That particular engine has an old school supercharger on it, however the stock configuration was/is fairly stout.

  5. It sure looks Lincoln with the valve covers. A tach drive distributor? On a Lincoln? Could the engine be out of a first generation Continental? Looks like rare stuff?

Your friend is right, he's got a cool old engine

  7. It’s with it and the gauges.
The gauge cluster has a tach.
These parts were supposed to be together.
He mentioned 57 Lincoln but not sure

That cluster is from a Continental Mk II, 1956-1957, I would assume the engine is as well although maybe not.

Continental Mark 2. Valve covers and dash. Google it, and pick a for sale add with pictures.

    Looks like it to me.

Sorry, I don’t type fast enough.

Not a MEL, a version of the y-block [different head/ports] in Mercurys and Lincolns; I think there was a 383 version too.

  11. Looks like it
    Thanks

  13. Lincoln M2 listed as being a 3 speed “turbo drive” auto.
    Similar to an FMX?

I think it’s an upgraded Fordo. Maybe even an additional upgrade from the Merco matic. Takes an engine hoist to pick one up.

I think the distributor is the same as the Yblock (got to change the cam gear), and tbird tach drive distributors are worth $750 when in need of a rebuild. That combo might be worth enough to someone restoring a Mark to pay for a good sbc.

Not to mention the weight. But it would be a cool combo.

Phooey... Tell him to run the Linc. It's an engine rarely seen anymore. & run the gauge cluster, etc. Will get more attention than the A. Maybe he'll clean-up the rodent-stick, should be fun, torquey beasts... should provide a good kick in the pants acceleration. & look good doing it...

That is in fact a 56 or 57 Continental Dash Gage Cluster.

Here’s pictures of my 56 Continental Gage Cluster

With that presuming that engine is a 56 or 57 Continental Engine.

Not sure, but I think the distributor with the “normal” vacuum can, as opposed to the loadomatic, and the more modern carb set the engine as a 57, or one that has had the intake/carb/distributor upgrade.

I had a few 57-58 Mercury car's with the 368 motors was told by a Merc- Lincoln collector that the 368 motor was from the industrial side of Ford motor company used in forklifts and there was a reason they had to use the 368 just can't remember but I did let him have the motors for free if he pulled them out and he did.

Wouldn't mind getting that power steering pump and bracket maybe even the whole setup if your friend decides to not use the Lincoln power plant. The 368 would be quite a jump over the 317 I'm running now.

I agree with Mr. Stevens above, if your friend is determined to build some kind of a rodent with his Model A stuff, encourage him to forward the Lincoln to someone who will put it to better use. Come to think of it, that engine and trans should be in your Merc. Find him, a runner SBC, a little MIG welder, some Olds Rocket valve covers and a box full of gears and chains. For his purpose there are a lot of better options.
