I recently picked up a 51 4 door Merc and noticed that the front bench seat is split and folds forward the same as I would expect in a coupe. Were all 4 door Mercs like this? Curious why since they usually aren't the same. I can see it from a bean counter perspective though.
Not an expert but I suspect someone replaced the seat with one from a 2 door. Is the upholstery an exact match to the rest of the car?
Yes, the upholstery matches perfectly. The guy I bought it from said his dad bought it around 1962 and drove it a little then parked it. Unfortunately it was parked out in the woods where the back window got broken out and pine needles and years of exposure has taken it's toll. Lots of rust repair ahead.
I'm pretty sure it's as @Rusty O'Toole says and the sedan seat was replaced with a coupe seat for some reason once upon a time. The sedan back seat wasn't split and didn't fold. Maybe the upholstery was worn and there was a coupe in the junk yard with a decent one or something. There were only like 3 upholstery options so would have been easy to match. Congrats one the purchase. Pics?
Thanks. Mostly solid. All the pans, rockets need replaced. And then some qtr panel repair and front fender by the rocker. I have floor panels from another Merc but will have to order the rockers from Matt Townsend. I need to get enough work done to stabilize things like the B pillar. It's on the verge of coming unattached. Supposed to get the top chopped this fall.
You can’t go wrong with the parts from Matt. I have some of his floor pans and he made me a repair section for my package tray. Top notch stuff
Funny, my '49 coupe came with a straight bench. Pretty sure it didn't come that way because it's just about impossible to get in the backseat.
