Hot Rods Up close look at the controversial roadster at GNRS

  1. Why do I have a feeling this is going to be just like that whole brouhaha regarding the Church coupe. I mean seriously, have they no shame? They’re acting like a bunch of clowns who have no concept of how this car might inspire someone else to do the same thing. But that’s just me.

  2. I think it’s great, damn sure a nice build.
I can understand some people might not like it, but where’s your AMBR contender or winner and why aren’t you there judging the competition.
She’s 22 and built her dream car. Probably won’t be her last either.

I saw that early on, very surprising it hasn’t been mentioned

I am sure it was on purpose to somewhat replicate the picture of her younger self in her pink pedal car.

The color is starting to grow on me, real craftsmanship as well as nice design. I like the wheels and how they are tucked in, wish my T was more like that (I am too cheap to do the modifications), there is not much I don't like. I really think with the color they should have used a Harbor Freight purple gun though:)

Wish I had a granddaughter interested in cars like that:(

I happened to see this car today at the GNRS. It is a super nice car. It was displayed with mirrors to show the underneath. It just a nice as the rest of the car. The color doesn’t take away from the quality of the car at all.

I like it overall, but I don't really understand the wheel choice. If you want it to look like steel wheels why not just use steel wheels? I like the color combination.

If all rods were painted flat black how boring would that be, this young woman had a vision of her car and stuck to it thats more then I can say about my self I'm always changing things thats why I cant finish my cars. The color looks more on the red side to me Mary Kay now thats pink.

I'm thinking that the stretched cockpit is to get the long legged driver down and in rather up and on.
I saw a number of slant back windshield low slung low driver position roadsters at Deuce days NW in 2019 that had that same get in hang on and shut up look going.

That color kicks ass. The wheels are fine. I know there are many on here that think every hot rod needs to be a red deuce roadster with black interior & Cragar SS wheels. And, if that's what you like, great. Get your car duster out & polish your cookie cutter, before you park your fat ass in your lawn chair. No imagination. How boring their lives must be. They probably listen to only oldies music. Or worse yet, top 40 country. Lighten up Francis.

I am just going to say it.

The colour PINK rubs a lot of guys wrong. Mainly because it strikes out as a femme colour.
My prior Edsel was suede black and pink (!), and I got a lot of shit thrown at me because of that.

But in the '40's. and '50's the colour was COOL. Pink cars, rods, customs were the THING! Clothing too! Be it guys or gals!!

Pink and black is a killer colour combo, and always will be.

As for the engine/trans combo- yeah, not my thing, but at least there is a killer set of valve covers and a really cool air cleaner to top it off.

Originally pink was the designated color for boys, and blue was for girls. Got swapped around somewhere along the way. Google it if you need to.......

Besides, only insecure guys have a problem with pink............. 3...2...1...:rolleyes:

You got that absolutely correct. It all started with a dept store wanting to make more sales as kids generally wore white and the clothes were handed down. Not good for sales so the store came up with the coloured coded idea. Later another store decreed the the colours should be reversed... Always hated that BS.

I love the hot pink but there are a few things I would have done differently. Trad flames instead of the sea weed style, baby moons, maybe WW tires, manual transmission, and perhaps white flames instead of black. But the i wasn’t paying for the work.

I remember when I wore a hot pink shirt one day at the school I taught at for 38 years. My students questioned why I did it. I replied that someone in my classroom had to be bright and they hadn’t demonstrated it!

Later in the staff room, and this was a very “jock” school some of the coaches were trash talking my shirt. I reminded them, as was taught in grade eight Science class that colour was merely reflected light and if they were sexually threatened by reflected light then they had a bigger problem than they realized! Female staff roared with laughter.....

I guess 'cause I was just a poor boy, raised to work hard for little reward, I am able to find satisfaction in all personal achievments.
I find many versions ( cars ) of favorites that I, for one reason or another, would not want.
This roadster is indeed an outstanding example of design and unquestionable craftsmanship.
Those that want to poo poo certain selections have that right.
That said, I wish to point out my own personal take of the critiques.
First off, from our corner of this hobby,
that roadster would have been worshipped, in the '30s '40s and '50s.
No telling the amount of references we would see to it.
Next, my first act, age 16, with the car I was assigned to drive ( '53 Ford 2 door ) was to put the wheelcovers in the garage and use black spray paint to show off the wheels.
When My Dad disapproved, I was satisfied that I'd done the right thing.
The work done by Johnson is impeccable. ( of course )
The selected changes to dimentions are practical and reasonable.
As a for instance, the flames, while not orthodox, are not over done, reasonable.
I would not want to see Grabowski crab ( my personal favorite ) claws, on the cowl.:oops:
In my past there were two '64 Cutlass convs. first one Black second was Maroon.
One day I stumbled upon one, parked on the street, in Metallic Purple.
That image will never leave my mind, Stunning!
Which brings us to "The Most"
It is not Pink. I have studied the charts, and find it to be called Hot Magenta.
    It is the most.

I don’t know anything about her, GNRS, and the shop that built it, but I like it. Quality build for sure, and not traditional in the absolute HAMB sense, but good on her for wanting it. Who knows what the future will bring.
My youngest daughter enrolled in mech eng last fall. Surprised the hell out of me. Last week she told me she’s interested in the Formula SAE car the school is building. Also told me she’s watching the F1 show on NETFLIX, and now wants to go to the Montreal Grand Prix in June. Never once did she express any interest in anything automotive related even though I’m constantly working on cars/ projects since she was born. Having any females getting into anything automotive related needs to be encouraged and fully supported.

Long time since I read the books by H G Felsen but I seem to recall one of the Hot Rods was indeed painted "Pink". Like the car and the vision to build it. Interesting it has caused more angst than an extra tail light at an NCRS convention! LoL

  23. Thanks for posting that video! I love the Rod, and story. I haven't read all the post about it. But think it's SO COOL that she wants to follow in her dad's foot steps after losing him.:( She's looking fowards to driving the wheels off it too. My daughter asked me for my old coupe. She said, { that she has great memories of driving, and riding a million miles in it. lol } So now it's hers. If she ever wants to paint it pink? and call it the Pink Panther. That would be okay with me. She told me that it will never leave the family! Sorry, and now back to the high dollar $$ GNRS Rods. 141.jpg

I saw it up close. It's really well done. I thought it had the best display and I kinda thought it was going to win though I'm not surprised the Brizio car did. I had it down to those two.

We should be glad people still want to build deuce roadsters. Especially young women. Hell yeah for her!

Black wheels are BORING. Look at Chisenhalls AMBR. And a real smart move he did not chrome the exposed door hinges! And another thing. He did not use the BIG Ugly head lights so common among the sheep today.

@Offset The book was Street Rodder. If I recall correctly the car was pink with copper colored wheels. I'd have to go back and read some of the book to be sure.

While this car is well done, my personal opinion is that it not the best or most desirable car in the competition. I don't say that without taking a look at the other competitors. I'll give the lady credit for having a very nice car, but I would love to see the judges scorecards .......or to have been a fly on the wall when they were deciding who and why they thought a certain car was the best. Look at the attachment below and make your own decision if this car was truly better than its competitors. Its not just the color that doesn't appeal to me but the combination of colors and the black shiny wheels. I think there is too much black on it. The interior is pretty unexceptional for a Most Beautiful contender. Like I said, its a nice car but I don't think its an exceptional car. Look at her competition and tell me if you had your choice of any of these cars to take home with you........would this be your first choice?

While I think there are some who will not like this car because of personal biases, I don't think others should jump to the conclusion that everyone who doesn't consider this car as the correct choice for the AMBR winner to be biased. Competition of any kind should welcome everyone who wants to enter. Look how well the girls do in drag racing where they compete heads up. I like girls with grease under their fingernails. But I also think this car was not the best one in the competition. Maybe the judges see something in her car that I don't. You could paint it a different color and a guy could own it and I would still feel the same way compared to the competition. I also didn't think last years winner was the best choice and a guy owned it.:)

Other one whispers, I am a boy " when the nurse leaves the room, I will show you I am a boy."

Other one say great : Now show me, Kid kicks off the covers, " and says : See BLUE booties
