I quit getting OSR and Delux when they stared having the same articles in the same month. Plus I don't need to use pomade or spend tons of money on the right clothes to fit in. PBR gives me a headache and I homebrew so I don't fit in their little popularity contest. Both of those mags are way to conformist for a counterculture. I also saw when they took a sander to tires to make WWW, this was not my cup of tea. I do like Rod and Kulture, Hot Rod and R&C are cook. I also get Cooks Illistrated. I'm a fat guy and like to eat.
It is wierd that Rolls n Pleats is from Belgium but man it is a good mag. My wife has family from Belgium, and they study our hotrod history. I like the Wizzz Magazine because it is a small book, has a zillion pictures and some good hotrodding history, Kustoms Illustrated and now Lou's Hotrods Illustrated are great stuff. They are hard to get and you can't find them in book stores. The web is the only place I can get them. The last issue of Garage seemed to get better. Joe
I agree with Blackie, Deadend would probably rank as one of the best out there as far as print magazines go. From what I have seen so far they are doing a kick ass job and I would mos' def' pay $$ for an issue. The photos, the cars, the variety - bikes, hot rods, customs, bombs, and of course - THE GIRLS!!! FYI - I think Alex (Gambino Kustoms) said that he would be selling Rod & Kulture and Garage out of his shop. You can also find a wide variety of mags online here:www.kustomnewsstand.com
The Rodders Journal for sure too. I'm not always into some of their articles - like this month's drag racing stuff I'm not really into, but it's always well-written and executed well. Every issue I do buy, however, is a keeper. I'm almost sorry I didn't pick up their deuce-only issue. Someone already mentioned it, but Deadend Mag is a close second. That's some quality shit there, and it's too bad it's only in web format.
Very well put! I did buy the issue a month ago with the Mike Ness interview. I was hoping to read alot on his 54 chevy and maybe other projects he had going on. I shoulda known. The article barely made mention of his cars! If I wanted to read about the history of social distortion, id go search the internet. If Im gonna pay $5 for a car magazine featuing the guy, I wanna read about his cars.
I still get OSR and CK deluxe, but agree they have gone down hill. Big fan of Rodders Digest. Love to look at Rodders journal, but hate to pony up the $12... maybe if I dropped the other two?? As the fads come and go maybe I will dig up my stash of 70's-80's Popular Hot Rodding and Car Craft.. nah maybe not.
I've been considering dropping OSR and CKD fom my website lately, also TRK, as I still find it's layout a little lacking (look's cheap inside the covers). I'd rather provide quality stuff like Hop Up, Kustoms Illustrated, Rolls&Pleats and the like than pimp my arse anymore with the "Kulture" mags. Note for OSR/CKD: Being into cars, I have no idea WHO THE F#CK Mike Ness is....nor do I care or want to read about him. Give me some useful articles.
my only complaint,,,, i wish the mags would get out and cover some different shows outside of the comfortable areas for once...its like its a circuit .. it seems like every other issue is of either paso or viva....and they all show the same cars,,the most recent TRK and CKD look a whole lot alike!
I hate the F-word whether it is in print or in a forum. Just no need for it. I know, I am not cool, don't get it, and all that, but I have heard that word so much in my life that it has no meaning at all.
So I picked up issue 33 of the rodders Journal today to see what the noise was all about and here is my impression of the mag: Awesome photography and in detail discussion of the vehicle. they get an ace on journalism all the way. Excellent history lessons and the articles on the old survivor rebuilds was excellent. Again with awesome photography and writing. The cars they cover are excellent specimens (the cover car blew me away). the downfall to the mag I find is that maybe one of those cars was actually built by the owner and not the owners wallet. Most of those cars were one step away from a Boyd IMO. Yes the mag is exceptional quality in all other ways but I like looking at what people have built with their hands not their wallet. *puts the flamesuit on* Fire away at me all you like
I agree.I find something to like in every one of them and i'm thankful there are so many choices .I don't get why so many people have so many complaints and even get "insulted".
all of the magazines have something to offer. You folks should check out smoke'n shutdown. It is a German/English magazine, but done pretty good and the folks who do it are great. If you see it check it out.
Hey, Sam! Your issue will hit the stands on 10/25--everyone will then see which wheels you decided to run for the article... Druss--you an AD, huh? From one to another, I'd love to hear what you think of GARAGE. You at Martin?
Well, if you're looking for the best car coverage, any money spent on The Rodder's Journal is the best money spent. Coonan has made it impossible for anyone else to come even close to that kind of quality and consistency. I made GARAGE to complement a sub to any of the car magazines. If you have a sub to TRJ and GARAGE, you're a well-rounded sumbuck. In my opinion. I'm a former AD and ACD with Arnold Worldwide. We had an office in your neck of the woods years ago--not sure if its still there or not. I wanted my creative work to be more of a contribution than an interruption, so I had to leave advertising and start a lifestyle magazine based on car culture. Still working on that! And I know what you mean about knowing a ton of people who USED to be in advertising! STONER
I had the pleasure of meeting the creator of Smokin Shutdown. He seems like a cool guy and I wish I knew how to speak German.
I like the all (although I'm not getting any at the moment, just what I see at the book store) Rodders Journal is very well done.Seems to me alot of these mags tend to focus on the whole "culture" bug a bit too much.As cool as Mike Ness is, I would rather not read about him in a car mag.Hot rodders come from all walks of life.I wish they wouldn't clup em with all with the psychobilly trend whores.I have no bones to pick with anyone here thats just my view, take it or leave it.... I dont know, maby I have'nt looked into enough of them to have a rounded opinion. All the ones i've seen have come across that way..
Hey man, your not referring to the Aussy magazine Cruzin' are ya?? Thats the only mag I buy and I love it, best Aussy mag ever made, at least all the ads and for sale's are in my own country and I dont get upset 'cause that part I had been dreaming of isnt in another country and way over my budget, there just plane over my budget now!! Id love to buy the Rodders Journal but at around $30 a magazine once delivered its out of my price range. I flick through any rod mag I see, but aside from Cruzin and Australian Street Rodding (Second rate at best) Its rare to see a rod mag where I live, The newsagent wont get em in if there not going to sell at least 5 copy's guaranteed. I have one copy of OSR, saw it and bought it before looking through it NEVER AGAIN! Man that is crap, I don't like to be talked to like I'm a idiot. Just because I am an idiot doesn't mean I like it. Doc.
Where do you get that one from?? Looks cool. Didnt notice your an Aussy too, fukin idiot I am.........
Nobody that I know of brings it in to Oz. I've looked at it a few times to do so, but couldn't make the numbers add up well enough to do it....i.e, it's PRICEY once landed. Look here Doc: http://www.kustomink.com.au/
Thank you for proving what I suspected. You are most certainly in the wrong hobby. I assume you are just passing through- you need to switch back to miniature diorama building or professional square dancing.
