I have a ‘32 Ford with a Big Al’s 392 Hemi in it. What make of motor is this distributor for? A Chevy? It's off of my 392 but was told it's not a Chrysler distributor. Thank you! Bill
Can anyone identify which series Mallory the original distributor is? I want to get a Pertronix kit for it... Thank you! Bill
So this is the distributor you were wanting to identify in a previous thread? Now we see it is a Unilite. I googled Mallory Unilite Pertronix conversion and this is the first thing that came up: https://pertronixbrands.com/products/pertronix-ml-182-ignitor-mallory-unilite-8-cyl It also says this: APPLICATION PERTRONIX IGNITOR KIT FOR ORIGINAL MALLORY DISTRIBUTORS COMP 9000 SERIES UNILITE. 8-CYLINDER, SINGLE POINT, NON VACUUM ADVANCE, 12-VOLT NEGATIVE GROUND, EITHER ROTATION, . There is also the Ignitor II version: https://pertronixbrands.com/product...-adaptive-dwell-control-mallory-unilite-8-cyl
Yes it is! Thank you! The tuner doing the work said he wanted to use the Ignitor II version but also said to use the one that was black. Buy the II version is red! I'll show him this info tomorrow. Thanks again! Bill
Is the Pertronix a better pickup than the Mallory? Why change it? Are the parts for that one obsolete?
Just curious. The reliability of the Mallory has always been very good. The Pertronix seems to be a mixed bag. So why would prefer the Pertronix?
Highlander & Jmountainjr, the tuner working on my car prefers the Pertronix over the Mallory. And the Mallory in it now hasn't been working right. Thank you! Bill
That’s strange about the “working right” part . The Unilite electric module is either good or bad,,,,,there is no In between . If the distributor is not right,,,it’s the mechanicals themselves. Y’all might consider having the unit run on a distributor machine and be checked out . Nothing against Pertronix stuff,,,,but Mallory units were excellent hardware when right . Tommy
This promts a thought: if you have a 'tuner' working on your car and he's so smart, why can't he work out what distributor you have? He has the thing in front of him. We now know it's a Mallory Unilite (it says right on it), they're all the same from the neck up and yours has been adapted to fit an early hemi, modified from the neck down.
With that unit, there is no..."working right"...or not working correctly. It works or it doesn't. It's just an LED that stays on and the reluctor wheel that spins above it actuates the electronics as far as on or off, when the light is on or off because of the wheel letting the light through to the receiver and the connection is complete. I've run both the Unilite and the Pertronix units over the years. If I had the assembly that you have, I'd do my best to have it restored, and use a Mallory Unilite module if that model is still available. Mike
Maybe it was set up for an external amp of some kind. I dunno what Mallory calls em but similar to an MSD box, which if taken outta play might mot play well. Can't see your whole getup from here.
A tuner is the person who performs a tune up on a car. The borrowed application to 'foreign' cars came much later. By decades.
Unilite works with or without an ignition box , mine is 37 years old , mileage in excess of 200k ,( 5 different engines) has never missed a beat. ( yea , I know , no " proof" of anything )
Yes, a mechanic would be the person. Sometimes they do clutches, sometimes brakes and sometimes tune ups.
I worked at a place that had a fleet of Onan generators that had unilites in them. ran most days all day for years & years bushings wore out in the distributers till the rotors rubbed the modules . the dust would get over the pick up eye you would have to get the dust off & they would run again. I sold a car that had a unilite in it & a new spare module in the glove box. seen the car later had a Chinese HEI in it. I asked if it quit .said he didn't trust it so he changed it? I have been told about there bad reputation but I think they are pretty good
