I think the 50 Ford Crestliner steering wheel is the cats *** of wheels and have been looking for one for many years. I have seen them but only a few so what happened to all of them?? So who's got one on their hot rod or custom and is it original repo and any pics of them would be cool. I was lucky enough to find one this weekend and it's a fixer upper but missing the horn ring. I seen someone reproducing them but not sure if they still do and do they fit the original wheel.. One of my finds at Jefferson swapmeet this Weekend ...
They are in fact some beautiful wheels. I would guess that the Crestliners were some of the lowest production number shoebox Fords, thus the scarcity of original steering wheels.
You got some work to do but congratulations on finding what a lot of us consider the Holy Grail of Ford steering wheels,I would love to find a nice affordable one for the Ranch Wagon. HRP
Danny,The wheel does need love but for 50 bucks I couldn't p*** it up. My concern now is finding a horn ***embly and not sure if a repo is available.
Julianos has a repro wheel and horn ring, but it is a downsized wheel. Not sure if the ring is downsized as well, but looking at the ad it appears they do sell it separately. Could always give them a call and ask. https://www.hotrodhotline.com/julianos-crestliner-steering-wheel-0#.WuhcaIjwaM8
I just called them and they don't make the wheel or horn ring any longer . Thanks for the lead and good stuff
contract Kris Olsson or "fifties_fords" on instagram. should be able to at least get a horn ****on made.
Lime Works Speed shop sells the repro wheel and horn ring. They used to sell the ring separately, but again it's also a downsized wheel. I think they are an alliance vendor as well. www.limeworksspeedshop.com
Thanks for the lead and shot them a email but found the whole thing now. Thanks for the tip on Limeworks and ordered one and great folks to deal with. I have order from them before and always a pleasure to deal with. So I got the horn insert the other day and look beutiful , plus working on the wheel to fix the cracks ...
so did Limeworks sell you just a horn ring ? I inquired about a year ago .. They were only selling them with there reproduction steering wheels then... @continentaljohn
Yes limeworks sold me just the horn ****on and it’s Very nice. I told him I had a original wheel and he said they have one that would fit and great folks to do business with
I bought the horn ring ***embly from LIMEWORKS a month or so ago for my original 18"1949-50 Ford Crestliner steering wheel. It fits perfect! The kit included everything but the steering wheel. Horn ring, horn ****on, spring, brackets, hardware and screws. They even threw in a few LIMEWORKS decals and free shipping! $450.00-500.00. I don't remember.
How does the insulator work and where does it go? If it’s felt then I can use leather in its place as I have a bunch of hides and boxes of s****s
this one is for Ford, It wont work on Crestliner I think its spongy, leather wont give. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1626989375...1291&msclkid=44fa2adee1fc10afc9a14f1a0e4ca2eb
@manyolcars check this link out and it’s very interesting on how leather is and how many applications it can be used in. Back in the day we had to make our own gaskets on our metal working machines . We found leather was the only one that never needed attention once changed. It can be built up and comes hard or very supple … https://cwmarsh.com/why-leather/ I didn’t know about the gasket for the wheel so thank you
The LIMEWORKS kit comes with the insulator also. I will post a picture of what they sent me when I get back from my Dr.s appointment today. I made an insulator out of a piece of cereal box but found an original and used that. pics later.
Here are some pics of the LIMEWORKS 1949-50 Crestliner horn ring ***embly I bought. The original foam doughnut is replaced with a spring. The total price with shipping was $539.99. The thin paper insulator with the three tabs looks like thin cereal box material. I showed an extra one I had so I didn.t have to take it off the bracket. You place the horn ring ****on in the horn ring and then screw the top bracket to the horn ring with the three screws provided. Then use the two screws provided to secure the bottom bracket to the steering wheel. The spring (instead of the foam doughnut) goes in between the two brackets. The horn ring ***embly locks into place to the steering wheel by engaging the three tabs and turning the horn ring like the regular 1949-50 horn ring. The foam doughnut is not included with the kit. The picture of it is just for reference of the original part that is replaced with the spring. I believe LIMEWORKS has other ****ons The one in the pics is the one I choose.
