Technical What are you working on?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Lloyd's paint & glass, Jul 18, 2022.

  1. I was reading that thread where the converter won't go in the 283 and someone was talking about measuring the snout on another converter to compare.
I was thinking to myself that I have a couple converters in the garage but then thought they both have fluid in them and I'm not about to stand them up to measure the snout lol

  2. Bungee cord held the whole 92 miles there !

I was surprised to see among the 50 something modern cars in the facility at Alfred State there was a handful of old iron too.
An all original 56 2 door merc, 40 chevy coupe with early sbc complete with vette valve covers and fenderwell headers, 46 dodge 4wd truck that's been in the "great race" a couple times, first gen firebird and a second gen big block motion Camaro.
The engine room was packed full of about 20 engines torn down, everything from modern to a nail head buick, transmission room was the same, everything from modern overdrives all the way down to the 56 merc 3 speed.

Ok I flipped a hose clamp and scrubbed the lettering off the hoses...

I gotta admit, his alternator wiring is a lot cleaner looking than mine:

    Peer pressure is a bitch!
I continued the Austin gasser upgrade. Made a bracket to relocate the brake junction block out of harm’s way. Took a Wire brush to a bunch of the rear end stuff. Painted the areas where I added gussets and stuff.
I was afraid that this project would snowball and it’s starting to. I reigned it in some by keeping the leaf springs and I’ll be adding some Cal Tracs type traction bars now that the chassis is robust. I was thinking of going to the 4 link/coil over setup that I have.
Today I pulled out the M/C with the intention to upgrade the M/C and definitely the pedal position. How’s this for a race car part? Anyone recognize it?

Strange choice for a supercharged gasser. It was a serious racer way back when.
In the pits somewhere in 1964.....

It stopped ok at normal street speeds, but the pedal position and angle was awkward and difficult.

I hope you'll find a better way to do it

although when you're working on a little car with a big engine, it can be challenging

You know Mark, as much as I like the LT-1 valve covers and as good as they look on there, aren’t they just a little too “late model” for your Corvette? I think a set of well polished and detailed stock Corvette valve covers, early Cal Custom, Moon, Edelbrock, or maybe chrome stock script covers would be more appropriate.
I’ve seen some smokin deals on nice LT-1 valve covers but I never have a car that they are period correct for. Just my $.02.

if you need the holes for ventilation, they are the best thing out there

If it’s an early block with a road draft tube there are ventilation options. If not, it’s harder to do but not impossible. They do look good in any case. And that Man-a-Fre is just awesome.

Have a look at this thread. I know the bracket would be of a different design but you might get an idea of how to do yours.

Is any of the original mounting there?
From memory the master cylinder was under the floor with the front brakes being hydraulic and the rear mechanical.

Yeah, it is an early 70's 350. no road draft tube. I kinda need late covers for the PVC stuff. I have 2 sets of early corvette covers but I really did not want to drill a hole in the Man a fre for a pvc grommet
