Hey guys, I was given as partial payment for some work a super clean 63 ford falcon with the inline 6 (not sure which one) motor needed to be put together when I got it. It’s all together except for the fan and shroud because I’ve got to source one. I have a neighbor kid that’s 13 he can tell everything there is to know about every old car he sees on the road just like a lot of us his age. Damn good boy, respectful, loves his mom and friends not many kids like him in this day and age no more and deserves his first car to be an old classic. Not fast, just cool. I got the car with things missing like the water pump, ign system, gas tank, stupid stuff as if they were restoring it so to speak and lost interest. All I have left is the fan and shroud. Did these cars have a clutch fan or just a straight fan? Also, did they have a shroud? I’ve gotta source them so I wanna know I’m buying the right parts so to speak. Thanks Danny
Just a 4 blade fan and probably not a shroud. The fan was about 3/4’s to 1” from the radiator. I’m guessing the engine is a 170” which is a great engine coupled with a 3 speed standard. They were available with a 4-speed too. Driven correctly, 25 mph was the norm. On the highway 30.
I’ve never seen one with a shroud, you can tell a 170” from a 200” by the freeze plugs. 3 for a 170, 5 for a 200. Likely over the years, some things engine wise may have been changed. There are a few good threads on here regarding Falcons that might be helpful to you. Good luck with your project.
Not saying it’s not a 200 in it either because it was a better engine to replace the 170 with if the need came up. Ford made a good many more 200s than they did 170s.
If it has the standard 3 spd. be careful, the tranny case is pot metal and are prone to coming apart if you drag race them. Not that he would. But that is a great car to start with.
Ford made three levels of six cylinder motors in the 60/70s. The 170 and 200 likely have a lot of interchangeablilty. There is a 240 that possibly could be swapped in but most everything is different about that. Then there is a 300 motor that would not fit without cutting the car ... too long.. I have had a couple 70s Mercury Comets with V8s and no real experience with the sixes except to see a lot of other guys talking about them in their Mavericks and Comets. The 240s were equipped with the same radiator, AC, and brakes, etc as if the car might have had a 302 V8 instead So many times, I have heard that the one barrel carbs are a lot of trouble and frequently swapped for two barrels. A Pertronix ignition conversion is one of the BEST things you can do too, get rid of those points and make the car start and drive well. If the car is going to be used on the road with modern cars on a regular basis, swapping to at least front disc brakes is something I consider to be the minimum nod to safety one should do.
