First run out in my Coupe, goes better than expected. But now I reckon it could do with a '33-'36 front axle for more drop and some leaves put back in again to prevent bottoming out, it needs to end up about 1" lower methinks.

So after chasing every unimaginable mystery problem, I finally have the Akron-Hed running strong thru the entire rpm range on all sorts of roadways and in a wide range of temperatures. All was fine on straight roads in hot Nebraska summer weather, but fell apart on cool twisty roads in Oregon.

The intake valve seats were settling and causing poor compression on 2 cylinders. The distributor centrifugals we’re sticking wide open causing poor low rpm performance and impossible starting. The sideways carbs were waaay more problematic than I predicted during left turns (OK in Nebraska, BAD in Oregon). The dual carbs were way over sized and so the intermediate accelerator wells didn’t have enough vacuum to discharge off idle.

Removing one of the carbs allows the accelerator wells to discharge. The dizzy was repaired (no thanks to Pertronix). Carb oriented into “proper” direction now performs well while turning. It looks a bit funny right now and feels like it could use a bit more carb, but is workin good and will have to do for now.

In my defense, the carbs flowed about 50% more than I expected, and would have made a smaller set if I had known. So have been working on a design for a single pot intake and C barrel. It’s only time and money…

Glad you got it sorted in the end. I fell for the 'must have two carbs, one dosen't even look fast enough' thing. Changing to just one cured all the problems except the aesthetic one!

  6. I've always looked at Ed Archers T as the engine set up for road racing. Think he runs a single 1 3/4 Juhasz, he would routinely touch 100 on the longer straights. At the end of the day, we're trying to feed 183 cubic inches at <3,000 rpm, it just doesn't need all that much fuel. Congratulations on building a carb that flowed better than expected! Really enjoy seeing your work.

Alas, tough choices ahead: 1) new manifold 2) a pair of smaller throttle bodies. What will it be folks?? Get your votes in early!!

  8. I vote two smaller TBs
    Kevin is the man

PS I’ll take the old ones….

    Haha
There we have it! Two new TB's @Kevin Pharis the expert's have decided! Cause we all know it needs to look fast standing still! Hahaha & this Arm Chair Expert say's how hard could it be! Hahaha

Seriously though, congratulations on doing such a good job on those carbs, I gather you have bench tested them? & They flow better than your charts suggested?

That’s the conundrum fellas… all the barrel bolt patterns are unique per size, so if I make a pair of A’s I still need adapters. Need a manifold to spread the carb(s) to cure the left turn issue (or move to Nebraska). The smaller throttle bores are actually harder to make as it’s much tighter to get tools down in there. The C would be more desirable if I were to make spare parts… but sure isn’t duals!

But wait… what about B barrels that have A venturies…?!? This way I wouldn’t have to make new choke horns, etc… The ultimate fake!

The chart I have posted several times before uses the actual flow data from my new B, and assumes all the rest. There was a fella that flowed a C or CC here recently that came up with numbers very close to my estimates. I am unaware of any other sizes having been flown. My WAG was that the B was 100 cfm… Oops! Apparently WAG’s are subject to 50% error:eek:

I see, I thought that they were actual figures you started with,

The other option is to build a bigger engine! How big can you take one out?? ;)

Why not? That's just how new Stromberg 81s are made, and they still come with 97 cast into the side.

Big Winfield barrel throttle tuned with a sleeve, The second Winfield's throttle is running in ball bearings. These are both Model N Winfield's with early and late float bowl.

I've always like the idea of a front mount blower ever since I saw the MoonEyes dragster when I was a kid. 1-Potvin-Mooneyes.jpg
