As I approach my twilight years(67!) I'm starting bucket list things. I've always liked the Popular HotRodding Project X 1957 Chevy circa the November 1969 cover shot.
I think a clone of the Project X Chevy from this time period could be fun. It seems the era that most people like is the Hollywood Knights version. It's OK that way, but just not nostalgic enough to me.
The particular point in time that I'm going to replicate is right when they switched from the injected small block to a 427 L-88 type engine. I like the engine combo and I like the paint job it had at this time.
I'm familiar with making clones, some of you may remember my Hot Rods To Hell Corvette a few years ago...https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/hot-rods-to-hell-corvette-build-finale.951107/
I've found a suitable car to start with and will be posting pictures soon. upload_2024-2-22_20-4-11.jpeg

Yes! That poor thing has been going downhill ever since they tubbed it, yuck!

  8. Honestly my favorite iteration of project x was about a year or two after they got it. I saw scans of some pages where even though they hadn't gotten heavy with modifications yet it looked plain out hot rod. Really made me think of a vintage model car

That version is the pinnacle of project X .. I have it saved in my phone and have been reading about it since I was 8 and I'm 60 now. Really looking forward to a bad ass clone because the original is Fucking ruined now. I don't cuss on here often but they screwed the pooch on that poor car.

  10. The year 1969, a lot of things happened back then !

  11. I thought the style/era cut off here was 1966?

(And yes, I loved Project X)

It went off a cliff when they installed an electric motor in it. I think Freiburger has since reversed that, thankfully.

My favorite version is the one with the black hood scoop when it had the L88 with the tunnel ram and dual 660s . I'm pretty sure it had a clutch turbo also... I think Mark will give me a pass on this one:cool:

Project X is hot rod royalty, unlike some iterations of it, it should be respected.
Cloned cars are so yesterday, now a " tribute" car would honor it.
It doesn't need to be an exact copy but it can be your version of it.

there isn't anything about that 69 version that couldn't have been done in 65 (a 427 is just a bored out 396) there is no difference featuring this project or a modern day build of lets say a 32 ford roadster with a flathead, whitewalls and 50 merc caps. they both look like they could have been built in 65 or before...

  20. I always thought that "Project X" graphic would look good inside the trim on the quarter and off the door

34566.jpeg There are times I really wish mine was a 210 I also think alot about pulling the blown sbc out and putting a big twin carb rat in it...

Man! That's a tough call! I have a HUGE soft spot for blown SBC's, especially in a tri-five. But an L-88 with a tunnel ram on top is just plain... TIT'S!!!:cool::cool: I just don't want to do all the cuttin', beatin', and hackin' to make one fit. It would be SWEET though! F.W.I.W... Leave the Huffer on it and drive the piss out of it!!!

Wasn't Freiburger, it was Alex Taylor and Lucky Costa on Hot Rod Garage. The enviro weenies pulled out all the EV crap and Alex and Lucky put in a new big block crate motor, a 500 or 600 something. Now it's a better rendition of it's old self!

It's far too hacked to ever be what is was . Corvette front suspension ,Tubbed rear, Custom chassis, the GM styling mods that were done to it etc.

  29. When GM took it that was the start of the downfall, even changed the signature radiused rear quarters, they really messed up the lineage of that car.
