I’m going from the stock 2bbl carb and intake on my 62 Mercury to a 4bbl with Offenhauser intake. The one thing I thought would be simple was the throttle linkage. Having put them side by side I was wrong!

Autos are a bit of a new thing for me and this has a kickdown rod.

I could make a plate to extend the mount on the new intake, but is there a simpler option? There is very little adjustment of the kickdown linkage from what I can see and don’t want to get it wrong.

Isn't the picture of the NEW manifold showing the distributor side/FRONT of the intake? The photo of the old 2 bbl is the rear of the intake where the linkages bolt on. What do the bosses/casting look like on the other side?

They’re both the rear of the intake, that’s the PCV hole on the new one not the distributor.

Easiest fix is to make a flat steel plate of at least 1/8" thick to move the 2 holes to the original position. Just do some careful measuring to get the holes in the correct location.

Thanks, that’s kinda what I was thinking. Maybe make cardboard template up that locates on the rocker cover bolts.

  6. Although there are a few options, the fore-mentioned plate is probably the easiest to go with. IIRC, Ford made a couple different bell crank ***emblies from the late 50s through the 60s for the FE, but hard to find. Offenhauser may have an adapter for that manifold. Hard to tell in the picture, but the later Autolite 4100 and 4300 used on automatic transmission cars have another arm on the throttle for a longer rod kick-down.

The throttle arm on the 4100 is the same as the one on the 2100 I took off, that’s probably why I thought it’d just be bolt together!

  8. That's pretty much what I had to do with one of mine. With careful measuring you should be just fine.

Do you know how much clearance you’ve got between a standard air cleaner and the hood? This new set up is about an inch higher than stock and I remember the air cleaner seeming to be quite close to the hood.

You really don’t need that complex set up! It was designed to steady the throttle while the engine moved in the engine mounts. It can be eliminated and one long rod replace it!

Then you loose the kickdown function don’t you?

Yep, forgot about the automatic! I just remember eliminating one back years ago!

  13. I have a small '63 air cleaner. The '62 and '63 also shared a larger air cleaner that I can't comment on clearance wise. Anyway I have about 3/4 inch clearance between the stock air cleaner and the hood.

Thanks. I might leave painting the air cleaner till I can check it fits.

I made a steel plate up to put the crank mount in the same place as the stock one so should be ok for the kickdown. This does mean that the link from the crank to the new carb is a bit on the short side so think if I can get a steel rod and make a new longer one all will be ok.
