I have a 1950 Ford speedometer gauge cluster. Is there a company that would convert amp Gauge to a volt meter? Also I need resistance values for other gauges. Thank you for your time. Terry aka dirt t
Williamson's might be able to handle the conversion Williamson's Instruments, Inc. - Gauge Repair, Restoration (williamsons.com)
Unlike ammeters that actually carry all current, the ammeter on your gauge cluster is an induction ammeter. The current carrying wire simply p***es through a loop on the back of the gauge with no physical connection. The stories about ammeters causing fires doesn't apply to this type of ammeter. I'm running the same gauge cluster in my Model A. It works fine. It tells you if the battery is supplying the current required to operate the vehicle (discharge or -) or if it is being charged (charge or +). The wired that loops through the gauge has to be installed between the battery and the power supply for the vehicle. If you simply loop the output wire of the generator/alternator through the gauge, it will always show charge when the engine is running and never show a discharge.
I have 2 induction type DC ammeters. Both are portable. One clamp on the other sits over the wire. Great trouble shooting instruments and safe to use. I never knew early 50’s Fords used them.
I thought those ohm ranges were only for fuel gauges. The "Empty Full Vehicle Application" would seem to confirm that.
