    from Wa.

You may not be able to afford it now but eventually after you race for awhile or maybe drive someone else's car with a real race car steering, you will wonder why you chose a modified passenger car steering to race with.

With a passenger car steering it gets more "play" the farther you get from center and much of the time in racing this is where the steering is operating.
Many times you will find the car does not want to go where you point it.

There are some race associations that will not let you run modified street steering boxes.

Was doing some more digging on the interweebs, and came across Jordan’s vid on his cowl steering setup. I’m sure I watched all his speedster build vids, but my memory says otherwise. I skipped through it again quickly, but didn’t catch what box he used.
For sure, cowl steering looks the part.

When I first saw your pictures (although they can be deceiving), I thought, from where you are holding the steering wheel, that was a totally plausible option. Maybe even get away with 2 u-joints. Cowl hoop with cross-brace at back edge of cowl. Steering column shortened to 6" inside cowl hoop. Steering box shaft angled up in line with column. Small blocks of wood for the shaft of the box and column and dowels with holes drilled in the ends with welding rod or clothes hanger to simulate shafts and u-joints. If a single u-joint won't make the bend, maybe a double will. When mocking this up it would probably be a good idea to have the floor and pedals mocked in place also.

Yeah. I agree. I think there is room to thread a 3/4” shaft under the last exh port tube and the bell hsg. Would likely need two U-joints at a min. That being said, I’m really inclined towards a cowl steering setup after seeing Jordan’s beautiful creation. Much more work and more $$$, but I need to remember what ever up I end up with is something that I will likely have to live with forever.

This might not be helpful to you but it could give you options. This setup is on my HAMBster and works quite well. Yes, I get bump steering but the rear end is rigid and the steering arms are forward of the kingpins but the cowl steering and intermediate crank setup works a treat. My apologies for the late model stuff in the background, I'm not proficient in cropping and before the moderators jump on me, those wheels were available on 1950 - 1960s Holdens, Fords and Valiants.

2024-02-27 16.35.51-5.jpg 2024-02-27 16.35.51-6.jpg #45. A new built modified but 1958 Wisconsin M S C rules. This is the exact steering design I used on my very first modified albiet #45 is a Mopar box. I used a smaller Hudson Wasp box back then. 1963. 2" O D tubing. Big end from a 265 SBC connecting rod for outer support. Socket fit inside the tubular extension. K I S.-- Wisconsin E W R A only allowed 1952 model engines in 1963. I sold the car at the end of the season to Bennie Prietzel. US 141 track champion. 1964 they open up the rules to any engine. S B C engines take over. Bennie stuck with the 1952 Olds engine and finished 2nd in points. 2024-02-27 16.35.51-5.jpg 2024-02-27 16.35.51-6.jpg

2024-02-27 16.35.51-2.jpg My black 27. I wanted a nicer look on the outside so I made an adapter inside. I cut off a 525 shaft and used an aftermarket Pittman arm. The box is a Willys Aerowing that Leo Brown [ upolster guy ] gave me. The mounts are on top. Lot's of foot room.
