Technical Early Hemi lifters not always what you think

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Arctic Rat, Feb 28, 2024.

  1. Ordered a set of 0812 lifters. When I compared them to the ones I took out of the engine. 1953 Chrysler 331 long bell, that I have no reason to believe has been changed from stock. This is the comparison.

Do I use the 0812 or get the newer versions 2011?

What is the engine use code? Looks like there is something else that should go on the top??
On an early 331 the oil feed 'slot' in the lifter bore is, very roughly, about .300" from the top of the lifter bore...this is a very rough number since some blocks have weird casting blobs at the top. If you measure from the deck it should right close to 4.0" to what might be the center of the drilled hole.

  3. 73RR,

Thank you for the response. Please forgive my ignorance, by "use code" is that something other than the serial number on the front flat spot at the lead of the valley pan?
    That number is C53-8-34235
I understood this to be simply an indication of an 8 cylinders p***enger car block.
Casting number is 13233229-1, build date 1pm on Jan 22nd 1953. This info from machine shop.
Here is a pic of the lifter 1 ***embled, 1 dis***embled, 3 pieces and spring. The machine shop I used does a lot of old engines, much older than 1953. They didn't think anything of the lifters other than "old style lifters, don't see them still around much"
I will take a measurement of the lifters oil hole in the block, but won't be this week.

Yes, the use code is the stamped number that indicates where the engine started life.
OK, a 53 p*** car ***embly. We'll wait to see but I don't expect a different measurement. Use the 812.

    73RR,
Sorry for the delayed response. Waiting on some parts. The engine is 2 hrs from me so I try to maximize my trips. You were spot on about the oil hole .310 from the top of the casting. The 1953 New Yorker/Imperial service manual we are using for info does have an exact pic of the lifter type I posted a pic of as being stock for the C53 engine. Seems to fit with the machine shops ***essment that this motor had not been touched (machine work) internally till now. I will be using the 0812 lifters. Thank you all for the opportunity to share info.
