For those that wish to have a closer look at the Eddie Miller Jr. Lakester a bit closer. The photography is by me.
It's too bad a lot of the Chaparrals got scrapped for parts to build the next one. Jim Hall was doing it mostly on his own nickel with no big corporations slipping blank checks under his door. Even thought he was worth about 15 million he was frugal. https://petroleummuseum.org/chaparral-gallery-exhibits/
@BigJoeArt @squirrel First rear engine Roadster to race against FED race cars Fisher-Greth-Maynard Speed Sport Special Speed Sport Roadster total clip: Speed Sport Roadster In reading a thread from back in 2015, here is a short video of the Speed Sport vs the Chizzler at Riverside in 1959. It is included in the “Chizzler Total” clip. It is fast, so look quickly. (Check out the scoops…) If they were friends, they raced like it was all on the line at this race. The Speed Sport Roadster was one of the coolest race cars around. They went all over the USA to race and they did it against the top FED racers of the time. It was one of our favorite race cars. There were many rear engine copies and versions, but we will always remember the original one. It impressed this teenager on that all day race at Riverside Raceway in 1959. It was truly loud and fast. Chizzler Vs Speed Sport at :03 Hello, Here is one drag racing build that gave regular FED racers nightmares. Many times, the top eliminator results were taken by the Speed Sport modified roadster all across the country for many years. Picturing two young teenagers fighting to completely read the early Drag News local weekly paper was a scene reminiscent of typical confrontations back then. Those early photos and stories from the Midwest and Arizona dragstrips were becoming weekly reads, since the photos showed this outstanding drag racing roadster. It was amazing that the Drag News covered the action from elsewhere, other than the local So Cal dragstrips. There were quite a few in So Cal, so the reading was not lacking. But, news from afar was also interesting. We saw the Westcoast invasion opponents back in December of 1959 at the Riverside Raceway, in Riverside, CA. After strolling through the early morning pit tour to see who was there, we were amazed at the race cars. We came upon the bright orange rear engine roadster we have been seeing and reading about in the Drag News since those early days. That was a find and we were awed by the real live action. It was a long drive there and back, but, well worth the effort to see the top racers in the USA in one drag race meet. Jnaki The feeling when walking around the roadster, the sound when it fired up, and the overall aura of the build, stance and bright orange/red color all make up one of the most prolific race cars in drag racing history. Audi never meant 'Auto Union Deutsches Industries'. Audi was one member of the Auto Union combine (with DKW, Horch & Wanderer).
just a few pics from the display boards they used to set up at Tucson area car shows...about 10 years ago...
Well Cap'n you sure know how to pick a scab. Rt hand raised, I "get it" when you say this car is a hot rod. There is zero denial that the world of euro sports cars is so often pinkies up and what I'll call "proper" to save verbiage. Now add the throbbing phallic member that is an AMERICAN PUSHROD V8 and this one, as well as many others, walks into the ball with their fly open. As the overhead cam high zoot euro engines sing like a choir of innocents, along comes a vein laiden throbbing hard on of an engine called the 327. The thunder. The pounding. The cries for help at over 7K RPM. If that doesn't say hot rod I dunno what to tell you. How better? Heh, that wasn't enough. FORD went 427, so did some later McClarens, many were 498 cubes in the unlimited days of CAN AM. Yeah man, all aluminum Bowtie MK IVs with stroker cranks and massive bores. Not a hot rod? Bullshit. Hoodlum engines showing the tea sippers how we do HP? Hot rod in-fuckin-deed...
The death of an Urban Legend.... https://www.audi.com/en/company/profile/history/four-brands-four-rings.html On 29 June 1932, ... company emblem consisted of four interlocking rings, intended to symbolise the inseparable unity of the four founder companies. The Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer brand names were retained. Each of the four brands was assigned a specific market segment within the group: DKW – motorcycles and small cars; Wanderer – midsize cars; Audi – cars in the deluxe midsize segment; and Horch – luxury cars at the top end of the market. Or is it? Auto Union ended up on the wrong side of the wall after WWII and was dissolved by the Russians. Some employees restarted Auto Union in Bavaria - At the end of 1945, leading employees of the Auto Union ...set up a depot for Auto Union spare parts. This led to the formation of Auto Union GmbH, an independent manufacturing company that was released from its former ties. In 1965 Auto Union produced a new car and decided to use the name Audi - which probably gave rise to the Auto Union Deutsches Industries legend similar to BMW = Bavarian Motor Works. https://www.audi.com/en/company/profile/history/recommencement.html
Is the Speed Sports car direct drive to the rearend or is there a transmission? Reverse ? Any good pics of between the engine and rear end? Always assumed it was direct drive like a dragster.
