I picked up a cool set of raw Frog Mouth Scoops cast specifically for the Rochester 2G carbs. I know I will need some type of carb screen or bug dome type filter and just wondered what you guys used? Tons of people seem to use these style of scoops, so they must not be too hard on the motor/carbs? Just wondered what you guys thought and how to go about protecting the carbs and the motor while still looking cool!

Thinking the one's like Mac's has with an actual element would be better than the traditional "Bug Dome" style?

I went to a fabric store and got the real small mesh screen wire stuff and have used it for a couple of years now. Not great for filtering small particles but keeps the big stuff out or an "unintentional" dropping of something in there.

I have sink drain screens from Home Depot in my scoops.

    I don't think those will fit a 2G carb, looks like they're for 97's and 94's.

Just go to the hardware store and get a piece of screen, cut it in a circle that's a little bigger than the top of the carb and slip the scoop over it.

If you want to go the extra mile, get a piece of A/C filter at the hardware store and sandwich it between two pieces of screen.

That's a good idea! I'm going to post the pic and the description of the screens and they look pretty universal to me though? See what you guys think? I think the Rochester is 2 5/8 across the top too?

Excellent read there! Glad I hadn't ordered those filters yet! But, this goes back to one of my other questions, would running these scoops say with the screen idea be hard on the motor? Like I said before, if it was that bad surely you wouldn't see virtually every multi carbed rod with a set of these scoops?

The Hot Rod Company sells 2 different types of Frog Mouths. They sell a steel one and an aluminum one. Big deal you say? YES............The steel units have a small ledge inside that holds the red puck filter in place. The aluminum ones do not have the ledge and the pucks fall out..........what this has to do with anything I don't know..........I have aluminum ones in a drawer at the garage. The steel ones are on my car......

    just saying........

Are you running them on a open hooded car? If so, I recommend running them with the opening facing the firewall. Ive run them both ways and facing forward seems to make things a little more difficult to keep smooth. I ran my last flatty with 2 94s with scoops like that facing the firewall, no sceens, no problems

See, I love the HAMB! More good info! The ones I bought are aluminum and have no lip (excellent point thank you). I will be running them on an open car with no hood and planned on facing them backwards, although I have seen a mix of people doing them both ways (another good point though!) Keep the ideas and thoughts coming!!!

**Just FYI, through me "research" evidently it is hard to find scoops that fit the Rochester 2G's well. I got a set that was cast specifically for those carbs from back in the day. I guess the set screw sits lower and the opening fits the 2G top better. We'll see if all this turns out to be the case? I've got the scoops and am waiting on the dual carb setup to be made.

A couple of years ago, one of the stromberg gurus posted that running the scoops facing forward actually blew the fuel out of the carb by pressurizing the carb with the incoming air.
I do know that when I ran mine facing forward, there was always a fine mist of some kind of liquid blown onto my windshield. when I turned them around facing the firewall, all the liquid on my windshield went away.

I had the problem with my scoops mounting to the Rochester 2GVs. The top lip on the carb is only 1/4" and the scoop set screw is mounted to high in the scoop to grab the lip. I've got a machinist friend making me collars for the top of my carbs. These will attach to the top of the Rochesters and give me a higher vertical surface, for the set screw to grab. I'm also adding a second set screw opposite the stock location for added strength. Also, using the Hot Rod Company filters on my set up. I'll post some pics when the projects complete.

I bought a K&N filter for a newer OT car, one of the rectangular ones, and took it to the band saw. Once I had the piece the right shape I stuffed it in the frogs mouth about halfway down the bend and siliconed them in. Because the car runs on the primary (center) carb while cruisin, every now and then I rotate the frogs mouths so they get evenly dirty. It's been 2 1/2 years now...

I had another hole drilled and tapped lower on the opposite side of the original set screw. Works good to hold onto my Rochester 2gs, issue I ran into was using the puck style filters with element suffocated the carbs and ran too rich. Still trying to find a bug dome screen that fits inside Rochester

If you can’t find anything, I wonder if you could just make your own. I was at our local Metal Super Markets yesterday, and they had several rolls of SS screen mesh of different sizes in their lobby.
